Monday June 10th rules quiz...

Post by Left Seater »

ND ball 3/15 (first number is the down, second number is yards needed for a new set of downs) at their own 20.

The ball is on the right hash mark at the snap. The ND QB drops back to pass and no one is open. He begins to scramble and finds no where to run on the right side of the field. He reverses his direction and ends up on the far left side of the field. With the defenders closing in quickly he:

A) legally throws the ball away just before stepping out of bounds on the far left sideline

B) runs out of bounds right at the line of scrimmage on the far left sideline

C) runs out of bounds on the far left sideline after gaining one yard

D) runs out of bounds on the far left sideline after gaining one yard, and during the play the defense was flagged for holding against an eligible WR

What is the next down and distance on each of these and where will the ball be placed for the next snap?

For all of the above: Beano Cook would declare ND should win the MNC.

Man Beano must be totally out of it. How could he not know Cal will win the MNC?

- edit -

I will leave this up until tomorrow and then provide the correct answer. I will then post a new question.

i say the same thing as everyone else....but, like my theory of sports journalism....if everyone is saying it....it's probably wrong somehow and probably won't happen.

so, why is lefty trying to trick us here....what's the lesson Rice Owl of Minerva?

So the answers are:

A.) 4/15 ND20, Right Hash
B.) 4/15 ND20, Left Hash
C.) 4/14 ND21, Left Hash
D.) 1/10 ND30, Right Hash

Reasons:

A) On an incomplete pass with no fouls the ball is returned to the spot on the field where it was last put in play

B) On a run or completed pass where no run follows the catch, the ball is put in play at the place it became dead, unless this spot is outside of the hash marks, in which case it is returned to the nearest hash mark on the same yard line.

C) Same as B

D) In this case ND would elect to accept the penalty for the holding against an eligible WR. The Defensive Holding carries a 10 yard penalty and an automatic first down. The ball comes back to the right hash, because of the accepted foul. Technically there wasn't a play, QB isn't credited with a rush nor does his rushing stats increase by one yard. So the ball is put in play on the right hash where it was last put in play.

My quick glance shows Killian and Mucho with the correct answers. King, I wasn't sure who you were agreeing with since most were slightly different. I also wasn't trying to trick with this one, instead I was just wanting to get everyone thinking about where the ball is next put in place since so many people don't understand ball placement. (May try to trip y'all up down the road though with something similar.)

BONUS QUESTION:

What are the two instances where the "offensive" team can choose where the ball will next be put in play?

Yes, only if the offensive team calls a timeout prior to the play?
