cal at 46. no way.
i think Oklahoma, USC and Alabama are the class of the modern era. Nebraska of the 90's best program of that era. maybe FSU too.
i'm not a bob hater like some, but Stoops has only won once.....Wilkinson won 3 times (and should have won more...if voting was't skewed towards the east coast and notre dame).....Switzer won 3....
edit: yes, there are OU fans that think Stoops should go. he can't win a game that matters....i read it here all the time.

What do yo consider the modern era? Not saying I disagree with you just wondering what your definition is.
I would disagree slightly on Nebraska as the team of the 90's. I think FSU has to be in the discussion. They played each other three times in the 90s, all in bowl games and FSU won all three. FSU never finished lower than 4th in the AP poll for any of those 10 years. Nebraska had a couple of bad losses to mediocre teams then as well.

fair question and good point about FSU and the Bugeaters head to head. i would say without being at all scientific or even a rigorous logic i go with since world war 2 (since the GI Bill had a significant impact on college attendance, plus the onset of the baby boomer generation.....) or the advent of facemasks. as a modern era.....i would also suggest the advent of ESPN and the CFA anti-trust lawsuit with the NCAA as a significant marker of changes to the game as people are want to define "eras". but, that's in the 80's.
i think the McKay era at USC is strangely underrated. guy won a lot of championships....maybe it's the tampa bay bucs that diminishes his legacy. don't know, but he's rarely mentioned as a "great" college coach.

I agree with you on the current def of the modern era. I tend to use 1950 on, but we are close enough.
I also think we are about 7 to 10 years from changing that to 1980 as you alluded. At that point 1980 will be 40 something years ago. Besides the things you mentioned we also saw the forward pass grow in its use. We also had some important rule changes around that time that opened up the game.
