You can argue some choices and add your own. Must see #10, Secretariat simply amazing in the record Belmont run of 1973.

At least they get it right and have do you believe in miracles at #1. Nothing else comes close.

Speaking subjectively, "Giants win the pennant!!" should be #1.

Never gave a rat's ass about hockey until the 1980 Olympics, and haven't given a rat's ass about hockey since then.

The greatest moment in the most watched sporting event on the planet doesn't merit a top 10? And to top it off, this was the only event inside the top 10 other than the Miracle on Ice that had any geopolitical considerations whatsoever. Ponderous.

That is exactly why that call should be #1.

I guess this could be looked at two different ways.

Top Ten Sport's Calls based on importance and significance of the event itself? Or, Top Ten Sports Calls based on the call really capturing the moment. Obviously, there can be a combination of this and the "Do You Believe In Miracles" meant so much on so many levels, so its a no-brainer that call should be #1.

My favorite type of play call is when it comes down to the wire and raw emotion comes pouring out of the local color and p-b-p guy...as long as you can make out what they're saying. If they are just screaming and can't form a coherent sentence, then it's just two blathering idiots who are overwhelmed with emotion.

I will never forget the call Gene Peterson made when Ralph Sampson made that ridiculous buzzer-beater shot against the Lakers in game 5 of the Western Conference Finals in '86. My dad and I were headed back from my grandparents lake house and we had to finish listening to the game on the radio. Gene Peterson's call was perfect. My dad and I really felt we were in LA watching that game court side. I will never forget that moment. Of course, the call means more to me as it was my team who was a part of the call, but it was still one of the greatest sport's calls I've ever listened to.

I also will never forget the Titan's radio broadcast on the Music City Miracle. I thought he strung out "THERE...ARE...NO...FLAGS...ON...THE...FIELD," perfectly. Just a great call.

The Gibson call should be #1. I agree with BSuck, the Maradona call was huge.

Johnny Most, "bang, from downtown." Listened to enough of his calls of Celtics games when I was in college at the U of Maine.
Re: Secretariat. I've never seen another horse or even a human in a race that put away the competition like it did.
The Olympic Hockey victory by a bunch of college kids over the Red Army team spurred a lot of emotion in this country. Don't really think I've ever seen anything else like it, or ever will.

I was 12.

At that time, horse racing was more popular than the NFL and a close 2nd to MLB. There will never be another horse like Secretariat though Barbaro came close.

pffft...

If it didn't happen in America, by an American, it doesn't belong on the list.

absolutely sure that attendance at horse racing tracks far exceeded that of the NFL, not to mention the betting handle.

The MLB comparison may be a stretch though.

The most amazing thing about Secretariat was how Turcotte never had to put the whip to him. Not even sure if he carried one. That fukking horse just wanted to run as fast as he could.

It shouldn't be on the list at all, for precisely that reason, nobody genuinely cared. It was a remarkable upset but just an excuse to fist-pump, then move on to other things. 'Do you believe in miracles' isn't imaginative, it was hum-drum commentary.

Wrong!

Play that call today and many still get chills. That also makes it #1.
