Born and raised on the North Side of Syracuse here. Went to North High. About 90% of the kids I went to high school with have last names that end in a vowel. Italian was offered in school, and many spoke it in the home. One of my pals, Frank Ventre, spoke it with his parents in the house. My barber, John the Barber, a Siciliano, drove a big black caddy and lived in the suburbs. When I'd be in for a haircut on a Saturday morning, these guys that looked like Abe Vigoda would periodically drop by, hand John and envelope which he would stash in a drawer. Yeah Bri, legitimate businessmen. But I'll tell you one thing. I could go downtown at night to see a movie. Walk back home, maybe stopping off at Tino's for pizza and beer, and feel 100% safe.

Mom's side of the family is Italian and settled in Syracuse. Apparently my great grandfather had ties to the Italian mafia to some extent, but I never learned more about it. Eh, he was probably nothing more than an errand boy if anything. But I remember as a little kid it was a hush-hush thing nobody would talk about even long after he was dead, but I think that was more out of shame than fear of repercussion.
