Sam Harris explains the futility? Of prayer? Sam Harris is your go-to for an opinion on the efficacy of prayer?
Asking Sam Harris if prayer is effective is like asking a cattle rancher if vegan diets are healthy, only worse. Because Sam Harris is an extreme nutcase preaching the religion of atheism. (Save it, if you're going to go into the whole "you obviously don't understand what atheism means" bit at this point.) He's only a teeny bit biased, don't you think?
That was an interesting debate, and the clip you showed was when Harris went off the rails and attacked Christianity using his New Atheism 101 Handbook. His reaction was emotional, and his comments were totally canned (albeit eloquently delivered). He was totally off-topic, only paying a tiny mention to the argument in question, and then not doing it suitably. He was not winning that debate, and it was obvious. But clearly, Jsc, you are easily convinced.
I find it interesting that the debate was about whether or not objective morals could exist without God. Especially since you played the "honor" card with regards to Mgo and his promise to his Grandmother. If God isn't listening to prayers, and prayer isn't effective, then who would even KNOW if Mgo didn't pray? Exactly no one, that's who.
Mgo: If you believe in the Bible, then you believe that genuine prayer does work. You should also know that it's not like asking for a shiny red bike and expecting one in your driveway when you wake up tomorrow. If your issue is that you don't know HOW to pray, but think it could be something you should do, just don't worry about the how. Just talk. It's not that hard.
If you're more like Jsc and make up your own religion as you go along, or if you don't believe in God, then it's probably not worthwhile to pray.
And if this whole post was simply a way to troll poptart, forget what I said. To you, Mgo... not to Jsc.
Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!
