Dear Wino's

This is probably not the right place to ask a serious question but I'm going to anyway. A good friend I worked with for almost 20 years has been having a bad run lately (dad died, had a bad back injury at work and a mild stroke that caused some brain damage). He's not a vegetable but no longer works or drives his car. Winters in Chicagoland are depressing enuf without all that baggage and sitting home alone. He's divorced no kids and he's only 39.
I'm familiar with depression and he is sinking fast so I want to try and boost his spirits a little whenever I can. I know that he really likes wine especially the red wines. I don't know shit about wine exceprt I think Merlots are red. So I'm asking you guys that know for some suggestions, brand names, vinyards, blah, blah, blah so I could surprise him every now and then with a bottle of some good shit.

I've been doing my best to avoid working at the winery lately.

Just an old cheap beer drinker here, but this is something that might do the trick. Not quite the same as Alphonse Giacchi's home made stuff, but get this or something like it.

Thanks Wolman, 88, some good info there and a price range less than $50 would be about right for my miniscule budget.

Your friend is suffering from severe depression, and you're buying him alcohol? You do realize that alcohol is a depressant?

No fucking shit. Why do you not have him put on that Sabbath album backwards where it tells you to waste yourself. Drink that wine down boy ! To my friend in depression, drink up boy and your troubles will be gone...

Terrific idea, BarFlie. You should also bring him a loaded pistol, you know, in case he gets bored and wants to practice his shooting.

You should also bring him a long thick piece of rope...

...in case a neighbor gets stuck in a snow drift and he can pull them out.

He could probably use some good doses of acid. Could help him come to terms with shit.

Especially if he lives on the third floor, or higher. He might be able to learn to fly.

Sorry, dumbfucks, but the idiocy here is overwhelming.

There's a fucking reason that man has been using alcohol to combat depression for thousands of years.

Because it works.

Not to get technical but according to chemistry alcohol is a solution.

According to chemistry you don't know WTF you're talking about.

Um Mikey, sorry to point out the obvious, but that line was what is referred to as a "joke".

And by definition it is a solution.

Get it?

Sorry, I'm at work and not allowed to have a sense of humor.

And it's only a solution if you mix it with water.

Why is someone named BarFlie asking anyone's opinion about booze. Shouldn't it be the other way around?

Maybe you should avoid chemistry discussions.

In case you don't know, YHKYOA.

Unless you have some 100% ethanol kicking around?

Any solution has to have a solvent and a solute.

By definition any alcohol, by itself, is not a solution.

I suppose you could mix it with something besides water to make a solution, but I'm pretty sure that's not what you were getting at.
Care to elaborate?

Pure ethanol doesn't exist outside of a vacuum.

Kinda why you can't buy it.

Under normal conditions, 95.5% is about max. The other 4.5% is water.

Ergo, it comes "premixed."

I appreciate all the comments but did you not read that line I wrote "he likes red wine"?

I don't know anyone that drinks wine to get drunk. He's the kind of guy that like a good glass of wine with or after dinner (like most people) :meds:
Thanks to many of you that showed me the totally ignorant side of your ass here.

While you're correct, I didn't say anything about commercially available ethanol.

If it's 4.5% water it's no longer ethanol. It's an ethanol/water solution.

Personally I like 2 or 3 glasses of a good red wine before and with dinner.

After dinner, not so much.

Here's one I picked up in Paso Robles a couple of months ago, and it was probably my favorite of a dozen or so different bottles I picked up on that particular trip.

Not cheap, it was about $65.00 at the winery, but I found I could get it for about $10.00 less at my local Costco. :?

If the dude is a really good friend, and he really likes red wine, consider this:

Good stuff.

Wolfman remembers his first bottle, from 1836. When it was called Fornicate Thyself.

Used to order a couple cases at a time of the stuff for chemistry labs when I was science lab technician at Edison State College here. We had a special license to purchase it and no, I did not steal any.
Here is an MSDS for it if your are so inclined to read it.

Thanks Mikey, I've been getting a lot of good info from you an others but still haven't settled on one particular kind yet. It's not very good shopping weather around here anyway.

Since you're in Shitcago and it's cold as bitch tits, you might want to consider mulled wine. Just get a bottle of cab for around ten bucks or so. It doesn't have to be fancy.

Bring it to a slow simmer with:

1 orange, sliced
2 sticks cinnamon
2 star anise
8 whole cloves
1/2 cracked nutmeg
6 or so allspice berries
honey to taste (I use about 4 tbs)

Simmer for about 15 to 20 minutes, strain and serve. It smells great while it's simmering and tastes great, too. We're on the same latitude now, so I've been looking for good winter warmers and this is one of the best.

Yeah, he could do that...

...or he could just smoke something off of foil and curl up in his bedbug infested flop-house, which is a more likely outcome.

I'm not sure how to reply to this without going all KC on your dumb ass. Alcohol may make you feel "good" initially, but it is a depression-causing drug.

The main cause of depression is reading your drivel.

Alcohol is a CNS depressant. I think that's what you're all trying to say.
