I have never been that impressed by him. Not that he isn't good, but, I never had the sense he was doing anything super human. He was simply good at running the West coast O for homeless guy. He was good at not fukking up. This is not enough, in my book. I would rate Roger the Dodger higher. That motherfukker DID do some super human shit......after giving 6 prime years to the USN. I hated the 'boys, even back then, but always respected Staubach as a dude who would never give up and manage to pull shit out of his ass on a regular basis.

Unitas was just a tough guy but not somebody I'd consider to be a great passer.....I think Marino is probably one of the best throwers I've seen....Brady has done a lot with average quality players surrounding him, but I think that's more a product of Belichick's coaching than Brady's talent....I'm not saying Brady isn't good, but not that good.....

not to sound too much like a homer, but I think Elway should be rated higher, because he was able to take two teams to consecutive Super Bowls with mediocre talent surrounding him...I mean Sammy Winder, Mark Jackson, Steve Watson, and Vance Johnson aren't exactly hall of fame type players.....that and the fact that he made Marty Schottenheimer his bitch is worth a couple of places at least....

Dude was almost as good a QB as he was a QB sire. Spent his entire career on a fukking dreadful team. Put him with the Steelers in the 70s and he'd have a few dozen rings.

Felix and smackaholic are both right. Elway should be higher than Brady. Brady is very good, but he's a product of his system. I would still list him as a top 25, just not that high. And Archie Manning should be there too. Great QB on a pretty awful team. As well, mvscal has a great point too, in that Bart Starr or Otto Graham are better than several of those listed.

Good call Sam, and I must admit I can't believe I didn't consider Roman Gabriel, being a life long Rams fan. McNabb has no business on a top 25 list. And I always loved watching Hadl play, as well as Kelly. Good arguments for all three of them.

Oh yeah Felix, Gabriel couldn't act to save his life. Damn, I did love that era of Ram football. Allen will always be my favorite coach for them. While I enjoyed the Warner era, especially given the Super Bowl win, it won't compare on a nostalgic level with the Gabriel team.

Exactly. I do kind of like the blue and gold look, but damn I wish when they were going with the throwbacks, they would use the classic blue and white instead of the blue and yellow version. What would be ideal for me is them returning to L.A. and going back to that classic look.

We bitch about how "pussified" the game has become, but I think it is inevitable that it has happened.

The helmets are a problem.

They aren't the same thing those old guys were wearing, and they are capable of dishing out too much damage.
So the league has gone out of it's way to legislate and modify the game into what we now see.

It's not as appealing.

Beside Montana, I'd have no idea where to rank anyone, and I'd only be capable of ranking those I watched.

But some of you are dissing McNair -- remember, that guy lifted some pretty crappy (and poorly coached) offenses on his shoulders and won a lot of games.

Then again, his woman though he was making passes at the wrong targets.

So what? Do you honestly consider him to be one of the top 25 QBs of the last 45 or so years? Better than Jim Kelly who was left off the list? For that matter, was McNair even better than Boomer Esiason?

McNair was 91-62 as an NFL starter.
Boomer was 80-93.

McNair threw for a higher percentage, took better care of the ball, and he made plays that needed to be made.

You combine this with the helmet weapons the guys are wearing today, and yeah, it is a little scary.

Looking closer at his list, I have no idea how D. McNabb would be four spots higher than D. Brees.

McNubb never once led the league in ANY significant passing category.

Brees won a Super Bowl and has led the league in passing yds four times.
He's led the league in TD passes four times.

Montana at #1 is a no brainer. I got to see Johnny Unitas play just a little, but from what I've read and heard, he deserves that #2 slot. Having seen my team get their hearts ripped out so many times, I'd have to put Elway at #3. After that, I don't much care.

But it was good to see Lenny "The Cool" Dawson made that list at #12.

Which one are you talking about? Dwight Clark? Freddie Solomon? John Taylor? All of them?
Roger Craig caught a shitload of passes from Montana as did Tom Rathman, Brent Jones and Russ Francis at various times.

Rice really only played with Montana for five seasons. He played longer with Steve Young.

Rice was drafted in 1985, after the 49ers already won two Super Bowls under Montana. Sure, Rice played a huge part in the other two Bowls won with Montana, but his role is overplayed by some in here as far Montana's total numbers go.

If you really feel the need to belittle his accomplishments, I would have used the argument of Rice combined with the defense. This still falls short of him not being included in argument for #1.
