Like seeing Bert Jones and Ken Anderson on there.

He hasn't played ten years yet, but I would have Aaron Rodgers ranked over Roethlisberger, definitely over McNabb.

Thank god this guy has enough sense to rank guys according to their talent and not on Super Bowl or NFL Championship game wins.

His top ten (for those too lazy to click and read):

Montana
Unitas
Brady
Marino
Manning
Favre
Elway
Young
Fouts (There ya' go, Frozen Sooner, Sr!)
Staubach
Can't argue with Montana. Not old enough to know much about Johnny U, but Brady?

Sorry, but no fukkin' way he ranks above some of the others.

I have never been that impressed by him. Not that he isn't good, but, I never had the sense he was doing anything super human. He was simply good at running the West coast O for homeless guy. He was good at not fukking up. This is not enough, in my book. I would rate Roger the Dodger higher. That motherfukker DID do some super human shit......after giving 6 prime years to the USN. I hated the 'boys, even back then, but always respected Staubach as a dude who would never give up and manage to pull shit out of his ass on a regular basis.

Uh...hello? Otto Graham? Bart Starr?

This list is a joke compiled by an idiot. Steve McNair? Ben Rapistburger? McNubb? He's got to be trolling. Nobody who pretends to write about football could be that ignorant...could they?

Yes, he's often overlooked.

Led the league 3 times in completion pct, led the league 2 times in yds passing, and led the league 2 times in yds per attempt.

One of the better QBs of the '70s and early '80s.

no question that Montana is the best I've ever seen
Unitas was just a tough guy but not somebody I'd consider to be a great passer.....I think Marino is probably one of the best throwers I've seen....Brady has done a lot with average quality players surrounding him, but I think that's more a product of Belichick's coaching than Brady's talent....I'm not saying Brady isn't good, but not that good.....

not to sound too much like a homer, but I think Elway should be rated higher, because he was able to take two teams to consecutive Super Bowls with mediocre talent surrounding him...I mean Sammy Winder, Mark Jackson, Steve Watson, and Vance Johnson aren't exactly hall of fame type players.....that and the fact that he made Marty Schottenheimer his bitch is worth a couple of places at least....

By Manning, I assume the article meant Peyton. The old man defrinitely belongs on this list.

Dude was almost as good a QB as he was a QB sire. Spent his entire career on a fukking dreadful team. Put him with the Steelers in the 70s and he'd have a few dozen rings.

You're still a fucking idiot. I don't care how dreadful his team was, Archie Manning is nowhere near a top 25 QB. 125 TD, 173 INT. Fun to watch, a great college QB, a very average NFL player.

Felix and smackaholic are both right. Elway should be higher than Brady. Brady is very good, but he's a product of his system. I would still list him as a top 25, just not that high. And Archie Manning should be there too. Great QB on a pretty awful team. As well, mvscal has a great point too, in that Bart Starr or Otto Graham are better than several of those listed.

Pretty useless list.

Good call Sam, and I must admit I can't believe I didn't consider Roman Gabriel, being a life long Rams fan. McNabb has no business on a top 25 list. And I always loved watching Hadl play, as well as Kelly. Good arguments for all three of them.

Now, does that sound like I missed the part about his team being dreadful? Nothing to be bitter about. He just wasn't a top 25 QB. Not even close.

used to love to watch that guy play....George Allen was the only ram coach that recognized his talent
terrible actor, I remember him in The Undefeated and wondered if anybody could have been more of a stiff while acting.....

Oh yeah Felix, Gabriel couldn't act to save his life. Damn, I did love that era of Ram football. Allen will always be my favorite coach for them. While I enjoyed the Warner era, especially given the Super Bowl win, it won't compare on a nostalgic level with the Gabriel team.

I like the white and blue Ram unis better than the gold and blue.
Exactly. I do kind of like the blue and gold look, but damn I wish when they were going with the throwbacks, they would use the classic blue and white instead of the blue and yellow version. What would be ideal for me is them returning to L.A. and going back to that classic look.

I want to see a throwback league. Old school unis and dudes actually hitting each other without wondering if it is a safe hit.

Ditto on luvin' the blue & white Lamb uni's.

I get a warm feeling looking at those pics -- and it's not me pissin' my drawers.

They look better than the current blue & urine ones.

But mostly, I look at those pics and I know that was FOOTBALL back then.
The real deal.

We bitch about how "pussified" the game has become, but I think it is inevitable that it has happened.

The helmets are a problem.
It's the helmets.

They aren't the same thing those old guys were wearing, and they are capable of dishing out too much damage.
So the league has gone out of it's way to legislate and modify the game into what we now see.

It's not as appealing.

Beside Montana, I'd have no idea where to rank anyone, and I'd only be capable of ranking those I watched.

But some of you are dissing McNair -- remember, that guy lifted some pretty crappy (and poorly coached) offenses on his shoulders and won a lot of games.

Then again, his woman though he was making passes at the wrong targets.

So what? Do you honestly consider him to be one of the top 25 QBs of the last 45 or so years? Better than Jim Kelly who was left off the list? For that matter, was McNair even better than Boomer Esiason?

I'd say he was better.

McNair was 91-62 as an NFL starter.
Boomer was 80-93.

McNair threw for a higher percentage, took better care of the ball, and he made plays that needed to be made.

He was a gamer and a winner.
Tough hombre.

Not sure he's in the top 25 of the past 40+ years, but he might be.

Scott wrote:QBs / players today are bigger, faster and stronger that the previous generations, or so the talking heads say. Usually don't see actual comparisons.
It's a good point, Scott.

You combine this with the helmet weapons the guys are wearing today, and yeah, it is a little scary.

I don't have a problem with the league trying to improve safety, but I really think going back to smaller (softer?) helmets (no facemask?) might be the way to go.

Looking closer at his list, I have no idea how D. McNabb would be four spots higher than D. Brees.

McNubb never once led the league in ANY significant passing category.

Brees won a Super Bowl and has led the league in passing yds four times.
He's led the league in TD passes four times.
He's led the league in completion percentage four times.

Ditto on the Staubach stuff as well. He wasn't the greatest thrower, but that fucker absolutely willed out wins as good as anybody I've ever seen. If it came to running for a first down, the dude had zero respect for his body.

So Montana was overrated because he played on an awesome team, but Staubach was awesome because he "willed" his team to win?

John Candy thinks you're an idiot.

Montana at #1 is a no brainer. I got to see Johnny Unitas play just a little, but from what I've read and heard, he deserves that #2 slot. Having seen my team get their hearts ripped out so many times, I'd have to put Elway at #3. After that, I don't much care.

But it was good to see Lenny "The Cool" Dawson made that list at #12.

This is true.
Which one are you talking about? Dwight Clark? Freddie Solomon? John Taylor? All of them?
Roger Craig caught a shitload of passes from Montana as did Tom Rathman, Brent Jones and Russ Francis at various times.

Rice really only played with Montana for five seasons. He played longer with Steve Young.

Rice was drafted in 1985, after the 49ers already won two Super Bowls under Montana. Sure, Rice played a huge part in the other two Bowls won with Montana, but his role is overplayed by some in here as far Montana's total numbers go.

If you really feel the need to belittle his accomplishments, I would have used the argument of Rice combined with the defense. This still falls short of him not being included in argument for #1.
