You got: Johnny Rotten from Sex Pistols and Public Image Ltd.

You’re smart and clever, and constantly disappointed that the world doesn’t measure up to your high standards. You have a mean streak, and a very bleak sense of humor.
Makes total sense: I always thought the sex pistols sucked goat cock

Joey Ramone

You’re fun and cool, and like to keep things very simple. You can be a little blunt and uncouth, but it’s very charming because you’re so warm and gregarious. Everybody loves you.

You got: Jello Biafra from Dead Kennedys

You have very strong political beliefs, and you don’t back down from an argument. You’re very funny and charismatic, and the world often seems like a sick, absurd joke to you.

You got: Ian MacKaye from Fugazi and Minor Threat

You’re extremely intelligent and idealistic, and absolutely refuse to compromise your principles. You are very successful on your own terms, but get frustrated that few others follow your example. People are sometimes intimidated by your intensity, but your friends know that you’re funny, kind, and endlessly supportive.

Eh, close but no cigar smashed in your bloody face mate!

That's what you consider "punk," Wags?

Just stop.

While he had his roots in punk-lite GenX, which sold about 14 albums in a couple of years...

Just... stop.

In 1984, that was punk.

And if everyone stopped every time you didn't agree or approve, this place would have been dead 8 years ago.

Go "like" somebodies post on FB, you rebel you.

Wags could be the only guy to take this quiz and still have the answer come back as Led Zeppelin.

Haha. LZ is what I was thinking too.

As for mme I got GG Allin, which is pretty scary actually.

It can be hard to tell whether you’re a brilliant provocateur or a feral maniac. You are pure, unrestrained id, and reject every convention of modern society. If you got this result, you are probably terrifying.

War Wagon wrote:In 1984, that was punk.

No, it wasn't.

First, if it was 1984, it was "post-punk," but that's splitting hairs.

If it was on mainstream radio, it wasn't punk.

In 1984, you could have gone with X, Dead Kennedys, Black Flag, Poison Idea (our local favorites), or a host of other "popular" punk bands.

The ignorant, idiotic answer would be "Billy Idol."

They're not laughing with you, dude.

X just played here.

Sad.

Geriatric tours are definitely not "punk."

There's a grey line between what could be considered punk and what is not. Billy Idol is not even close to that line. At best you could call him Punk Lite if you were feeling charitable. In reality, he was just another 80s rockstar by 1984. Seriously? Eyes Without a Face? Punk?

As mentioned, you could call GenX punk-lite. To call Billy Idol solo punk-anything is laughable... but it's Wags we're talking about here. He referred to the White Stripes as "punk" during Smackie's show.

With a rebel yell, he crapped on the floor
Then he squatted down and dropped some more

perhaps I don't know the definition of "punk" then, at least as it relates to this topic. But when I first saw and heard Billy Idol, I thought he was a punk.

I've since grown to like a lot of his music, call it what you want.

OK Wags -- here's what punk sounded like circa 1984:

Which Punk Icon Are You?

You got: H.R. from Bad Brains

You are very open-minded and try to bring different people together rather than keep them apart. You can be aggressive and angry, but you’re mostly a relaxed and centered person. You probably smoke a lot of weed

If you say so, then it must be true. I'd call that "headbanger" but what do I know? I know I don't like that, therefore I don't like punk.

I think I may have a few years on you Dins. My first love was The Beatles, then Zep, and I judge everything after against those standards. We had a spirited discussion about The Cars a short time ago and the consensus seems to be they were "New Wave".

So be it, but at the time, some people might've called them punk. Same with these guys, whom I think were comparable.

Jeebus. Forgot who I was talking to.

Here's a Wagonese definition that will serve as a general rule:

If you've ever heard of them Wags, they're not punk.

phew... the last thing I want is to be in Dins line of derision sight. But wait, what you posted earlier as "punk" circa 1984 bears no resemblance to The Ramones.

One, or both of us, are confused. But I'm sure we both agree, this is a great song.

American hardcore punk kinda started to fizzle out and go towards suckage by 1984. For me the peak was around 1980-83. By 84 bands were started to slow down, wither away, or attempt to speed up and meld with metal. For me punk didn't get exciting again til the early 90s. But in 1984 you still had some of the "big " names still touring the country. Black Flag was still going, but by then Rollins was into his spoken word shit.

And you have bands like DRI from Houston that were pioneers in the thrash/ crossover scene

Sorry folks, but even though Poison Idea was a good band, the Pacific NW was pretty much horrid for this music scene except for maybe PI and the Fartz.

Bill Haley and the Comets were rock and roll, right? They don't sound much like Jimi Hendrix, eh? Elvis bears no resemblance to Pink Floyd, eh?

For that matter, Weather Report doesn't sound much like Louis Armstrong.

The Wipers were pretty awesome.

PI put a little more emphasis on musicianship than most, which I think alienated some hardcore folk. Agreed, punk and metal kind of started merging by 84. I'm inclined to blame Suicidal Tendencies, at least in part -- they did the anti-punk and made money off the shit.

I never thought of the Ramones as punk. Too radio friendly. Not enough pre Y2k death and destruction. I never felt like Joey was going to bounce off the stage and smack me with his guitar like I did with Jello. They played with Blondie and Ted Nugent for god sake. It was all too tame and easy to be punk. Love them to death and they might have been punks, but their band wasn't a punk rock band to me.

I thought you might be talking about that post. My stance is that, to me, they don't even fall in the punk rock category, for the reasons I stated. I know you and most other people don't agree, but that's my take and the reasons for it. I saw them at the palladium with Black Flag and it was pretty clear to me that those two bands were in two different categories.
