I remember reading somewhere that Jack Nicklaus or one of those old pros was going to try out ideas to speed up the game and make it more more palatable for more people.
Golf courses may be seeing lower revenues these days? Add me to the list that doesn't care.

my home course experimented with 8 inch holes last year

http://www.idahostatesman.com/2013/07/0 ... etter.html

they wanted to see if the scores would change significantly.......

one evening I went out and played two balls, one to the regular cup and one to the larger cup.......I shot better using the smaller hole, although in all honesty they had the larger cups positioned in some pretty difficult locations.....larger holes aren't the answer.....golf has always been a fairly expensive sport (s'up $400 Taylormade SLDR Driver) but you can get a reasonably decent set of clubs for $200....and prices courses charge are generally going down......but the biggest problem has and always will be the time factor....to play 18 holes, I show up an hour early to warm up, play 18 holes, then sit down and have a beer or two and all of a sudden you've spent 7 hours at the course....that's a lot of time, disposable time that many people simply don't or won't have.....

What's the point of a 15" hole? As soon as I hit the green, I'd pick my ball up, count it as a one-putt, and keep walking. I'm certainly far from a pro, but I rarely miss a putt by more than 7.5".

I think that article is imagining a problem. I find every course I play (usually cheap ones, FWIW) is more crowded today than 10 years ago, and I see about the same proportion of young players as 10 years ago.

One of my favorite courses just put in a foot golf course. First one of those fuckers looks at me wrong gets punched in the cunt.

I fed my golf jones for a long time by playing nine holes after work 3-4 times a week. Then my wife and I had a son. That pretty much cockblocked my game until he's old enough to care about playing the game or out of the house. But I'll be back. Sometime. In the meantime if the USGA could try not to completely fuck up the game I love, that would be great.

Looking forward to teeing off here in a month. Love me some mountain golf.

^^^^Kinda like mountains, only flatter.

I like how that fantasized article makes it like playing 9 holes is some radical new concept. I'm surprised they didn't point to twilight specials as a coffin nail.

Good. I like forward to this stupid game being phased out and for all that land to be used for something worthwhile.

Yeah, it's only been around for 500 years or so.

You are a fucking moron. Ladies have been playing for over 100 years and Ouimet, Hagen, Sarazen. Hogan, Nelson, all of them caddies. What's wrong with golf is not that it is too open, it is that a bunch of rich jackasses decided they were going to build THE next big name golf course. And they built them all at once. Just like real estate, golf had a bit of a bubble.

88,

You're golfing at the wrong courses and at the wrong times. Go to a muni either first thing or at 1pm and you can bang out 9 holes in fairly short order. Oh, and leave the carts and bag carts behind, then you'll get a real workout. These upscale fee for play courses are nothing but conveyor belt golf. You might as well be on a Disney ride where you pretend for four hours that you are playing golf. Get on the grounds and carry your bag like a real man.

You mean like playing a game involving whacking balls around with a long hard shaft in your hands? Oh wait...

Well I, for one, look at it as a challenge. And I...I think I'm up to it. If you guys would just agree to go easy the first couple times, I know I can do it. Screwy? Stand by for a leaker...

This is what I think. I don't play very often but most decent players would make a one putt 80% of the time. There has to be a better solution than this. Maybe the six hole idea could work because to much time to play is a problem for people. I know some of you already said that. Has anyone played screen golf? Is that worth it? Could it be a close substitute for real golf?

What about cutting the length of the holes way down? From like 400 yards down to 200 for example. And then enlarge both the ball and the hole?

88 wrote:I used to play a lot. I practiced hard and took lessons and after a lot of work had a fairly low handicap (6). Then I had kids. And now I have trouble breaking 90 the three or four times a year I play 18 holes.

My personal view on golf is this:

1. It takes way too fucking long. I don't have 7 hours for a round of golf, most of which is spent standing around waiting for the slow old fuckers and/or women in front of me to move on.

> A round of golf should never take more than 4.5 hrs. Pick a different time or course.

2. 18 holes is too much golf in most instances. I prefer to play 9 holes, which if there are not a bunch of slow old fuckers and/or women in front of me, I can complete in about 2 hours or so.

3. There are a lot of assholes who play golf, at least compared to other sports. I play a hell of a lot more tennis these days, and while there are a few assholes there, there are far fewer there than on most golf courses.

> Other than some club snobs, the golf comraderie is pretty good....unless some dickhead is playing too slow....

4. You have an opponent in tennis and other sports. In golf, you battle the course (as does your opponent). But you do not battle your opponent, at least not in the sense that you do in other sports. You want to talk shit after a round of golf? Whatever. But everyone knows who kicked ass and who's ass got kicked after a tennis match.

> Most people play AGAINST their buddies, or have bets within the foursome, play skins, etc.

5. You do not need to have any level of cardio fitness to play golf. Corpses waddle out of golf carts, swat at the ball, and then slump back in for the short ride to the drop zone. Other sports wouldn't put up with that shit.
> I walked my 18 yesterday. Tell my aching body it didn't do anything. When you get old(er), cardio gets less emphasis.

The problem for golf besides the price? Well, it could be the skill acquisition ramp and steep learning curve. Most kids and young adults don't have the patience for something which is that nuanced and subtle. How about that you can't go with a bunch of friends at a moment's notice. The game takes too long and has too many etiquette rules. The pros wear goofy gear these same kids wouldn't be caught dead in. It only lets four people in a group when basketball lets you have ten. But the killer is that golf just isn't cool now that Tiger is washed up. After all, what kid wants to emulate fat middle aged men and fight huge crowds of fat middle aged men to go see them? You couldn't hardly design a game with less watchability and coolness. I suspect competitive chess would even beat golf.

One last thing-- a golf course is a good rifle range wasted.
