My maternal Grandfather was a combat surgeon during the US entry into WWI. He was the M*A*S*H of his time. He was also an avid amateur photographer. I saw some of his photos when I was a kid. The numbers of dead horses were a shock, they used many to transport materials to the front. He said on Christmas Eve the opposing armies sang Christmas carols to each other across no-man's land. In the morning they were back at killing each other. WWI was a huge waste and unfortunately set the stage for WW2.

No doubt. If I had to pick a war to fight, WW1 would be down around the bottom of the list.

My grandpa was an engineering student at Columbia during the war to end all wars. His older brother was a pilot and got to throw shit over the side bomb the gerries over france. He says that for his personal situation, the war ending when it did kind of sucked as it meant they end of the ROTC program, or whatever they called it back then, and his broke ass had to leave school and go to work in NJ bolting together model Ts. Back then when the feds actually had to worry about the money thy spent, the end of a war pretty much meant instant shutting down of military programs.

WWI was when command stupidity flew straight into the face of changing technology. The best example of this? It wasn't until 1917 that generals stopped thinking of artillery and infantry as means to set up mounted cavalry charges. After thousands of mounted men had been mowed down by machine guns of course. The whole sordid affair was one gigantic crime against sanity.

No Mexicans, mongrel or otherwise, were killed in WW1, so you would have been pretty safe.

Cavalry was still useful on Eastern and Middle Eastern fronts. The Western Front, though, not so much. Probably the single most ghastly horror in military history.
