Jsc,
Are you really linking us up to a site that says dude has a net worth of $500K? A house, a couple of cars, a retirement account, and a good percentage of this board has more than that.
I am certainly not a Jess hater, props to him for what he has done, but linking us up to his $500K net worth isn't helping you make your point.

Yeah, but when your only discernible skill is "looking funny", 500K is pretty impressive.

In addition, the majority of you can get laid. Not so much for Jess.

Most of us probably weren't there by age 34.

Maybe, maybe not. But we also weren't getting paid hundreds of dollars an hour.

Hell, yes. If I made $150 an hour when I graduated college I would have only needed to work the month of Jan to earn my annual salary.
And the more I think on it a net worth of $500K even at 34 isn't all that impressive. Just participating in an employee matched 401K for a decade would get one close to that number, not considering any other items.

You might want to re-think that one. You'd have to make some pretty optimistic assumptions to get close to $500K in 10 years.
Start at $100K with a 10% increase every year, 10% contribution fully matched by the employer and a 7% annual rate of return gets you to about $407,000. Some of those assumptions are pretty far fetched.

I would hope that someone in their mid 20s was taking risks in their 401K, not sitting back looking for a relatively safe return. That said, I see your point and will go back to the earlier statement that a house, two cars, a retirement account or two for married folks, and $500K net worth isn't very impressive for a 34 year old.

You know what's equally unimpressive?
A middle aged man critiquing the accomplishments of another, when said grown man can't successfully count to 36.

Are you saying the you can accurately predict the rate of return on any investment or portfolio (excluding munis bought only for the dividend)?
If so, you're either deluding yourself, or you should be richer than Warren Buffet. The compounded annualized growth rate of the S&P 500 from 2004 - 2013 (adjusted for inflation) is 4.88%. This includes winners
and losers.
Most of the "professionals" rarely if ever outperform the market. If you have a foolproof system to make us all rich, I wish you'd share it. KC Scott might even pay your for it.

Dins,
I guess you are bringing up 36 because that is Jess' actual age. I have no idea if it is or isn't and don't really care. I was just responding to Goobs point out most of us werent there at age 34.
And again, I am not trying to put Jess down at all. My point was that that Jsc linked us up to his net worth as if he is somehow getting over on everyone with his net worth. His net worth isn't all that impressive, but his cv certainly is.
Mikey,
I have no idea how you got your response from mine. All I said was a person in their 20s shouldn't be adverse to risk in their 401K. If they are maxing out their company match and not seeing decent growth, then something is wrong. Further, I have no suggestions on investing in the market. In fact I prolly don't know as much as I should regarding the market and investing, but we have a so called professional that handles that stuff for us. He only gets paid when we make money and he gets nothing if we lose or stay flat.

Yeah, since celebrity net worth has access to Jess's financial statements.
Anyhoo, it's safe to assume that they don't base that off how much he has in the bank, but what his gigs typically pay, including residual estimates. Even if that is just within the last five years, it's not that much when you figure an independent contractor has cover his own health care and living in an very rent location to ply their trade. Don't forget the taxes and all the shit self employed folks deal with. Even if that includes (or based on) his possessions, whoo hoo. He owns a run down condo in the valley. Big fucking deal.
Jess is doing it his way(we assume) so all props go out to him for that, but It's hard to be impressed for being, at best, as well off as anyone his age who can wipe their own ass.

Here's some food for thought:
From Forbes:
NET WORTH
Median family net worth
Age 45 to 54: $117,900
Age 55 to 64: $179,400
Age 65 to 74: $206,700
http://www.forbes.com/sites/nextavenue/ ... -you-rate/
Or you can try this site:
http://cgi.money.cnn.com/tools/networth_ageincome/
Punch in JtR’s age and say, $100,000 annual income, and take a look at the results. The FLF is doing quite well.

$500,000 is a lot of money for a guy looking funny. He's also kissed some hot girls, so props to him.
LS, I'm thinking you didn't take a big hit on your 401k in 2008 and 2009 or back in 2001/02 when the market took a nose dive?

Why would that be pertinent to the discussion, as long as he inherited it before he turned 36...errr...34?

Because he seems to think it's so easy to accumulate a half million dollars. Obviously, he has more than that himself. He just always come across as one of those smug little inheritance babies, born with a silver thumb up his ass.
He simply ignored the links that show JtR is doing quite well for himself, and just agreed that he himself wasn't hurt by the market downturn.

You do know that my father was killed by a drunk driver when I was still a kid, right? That can be tough on a family and can make money tight.
So to date I have received zero inheritance and no other lump sum monies from any source. Same goes for my wife.
Why are you so bitter and or jealous of those who made money and passed it down to future generations? I hope to be able to do that myself some day. I also never said we werent affected by the market downturn. I did answer a specific question regarding our retirement accounts with a specific answer. You then turned that into a wild assumption.
Sorry to burst your bubble but what the 'Seaters have today is all due to our own hard work and willingness to accept a little risk and start our own business.

Damn, how many occupations do you have? Pilot, referee, business owner, minor league hockey team coordinator guy. Even AP thinks you need to settle down.
It's impressive you can fit all that in between your vacations. If you had any personality I might call you interesting.

The business owner and pilot go hand in hand.
Football official is a hobby, unless you are in the NFL it doesn't pay the mortgage.
The hockey deal is more of a jobby! A hobby that has a small paycheck attached.
Yeah, I guess I'm pretty busy, but hey if I did any less I might end up being the heaviest guy who posts here.

But you do admit that a single man of 34 having accumulated a net worth of $500,000 is well above the average?
Look, I have a number of friends who've inherited money. Good for them. At least they're not pompous, pretentious boors.

My point way back when was only that $500K net worth wasn't necessarily a point to use in saying Jess was getting over on everyone. There are far more impressive things in his CV to use as arguements.

Bullshit. You suggested that a good percentage of this board had more than that $500K. Not very likely, and I'd bet a good percentage of this board is older than Jess, and have had a spouse to help them acculate what they have.
Considering what he has to work with, I think accumulating $500K by his mid-30s is a huge accomplishment. What has he done that is more impressive?
