Does anyone here play the piano?

Every piano-playing kid I've ever talked to has told me the same thing.
"I HATE it, but my parents make me play."

And even most adult piano-players I talk to say that they don't like it very much, but they still play (or are asked to play) sometimes.

What's the deal with this?

My parents bought a piano when my bro', sis' and I were young.
They made my sister play -- and she hated it.
I don't think she plays much at all now.

My older brother rebelled and said he wouldn't play, but my parents were hard-ass with him and told him, You WILL play something."
Trying to learn him some culture, or something.

So he chose the clarinet.

And when I looked at him with his clarinet, I thought to myself, "Damn, my brother is a faggot."

Maybe it was that little reed piece that he kept having to lick on.
Or just the fact that he was huffing on a pipe and wiggling his fingers all over it.

Whatever it was, I wanted no part of it.

I just went outside and was NOT TO BE FOUND by my parents.
Playing any ball game that I could.
No instrument, no "culture" for poptart.
Not IN.
End of story.

I remember my brother telling my folks that he chose the guitar, -----> and they overruled his choice.

They grew up in the '30s and '40s, and to them, I guess the guitar was the Beatles, and the Beatles were the devil.
Or something.

People look kool when they are playing the guitar.
Drums too, maybe.

But many of the other instrument make a person look like a damn goober.
Just being honest here.

Piano players here?

Other instruments?

Can you sing?

I can't sing for shit and I can't play ANY instrument.
It's kind of sad, now that I'm old and am such a musical failure.

Maybe I could learn to master the triangle, but I think that's about it.

Sing us a song piano man?
This could get interesting if the truth was part of it. Music and piano was a big part in my family. My Grandmother played it, my Mother, my sister. I had an uncle who had an MA in piano and organ. When I was a kid he kept asking me if I wanted to learn. I had played like 3rd clarinet in the Jr.High band. 3rd clarinet in a band is just playing some toots to the music. Sometimes I'm pretend I was playing and no one seemed to notice. Gave that up in high school when my attention turned to sports.
There were a few times later when there would be a piano and I deep down kind of wished I had learned. My youngest daughter is self taught on keyboards, guitar, etc. and she and her husband had a band. They toured all over playing small clubs, until they finally began raising a family.

If you can master the piano, any other instrument is a breeze.

Or so I've heard.

I was an all-state tuba player. I could play any of the valved brass (never got into French horn), but preferred tuba.

Mrs. Rumps and I decided to not give anything up for lent but rather take on a project. And that project was to learn how to read and play music on our piano that we never use and the acoustic guitar my mother gave me some time ago. It's still a work in progress, but we're enjoying it.
