Couple that stand out on first glance:

Sumlin at ATM 5-6, media hype glosses over that.

Pelini, 9-14, no wonder Husker fan wants him gone.

Shaw at Stanford, 14-4, surprised me.

Leach is pretty ugly, he only gets about 10 or 15 differential taking over Spike Dykes reasonably .500 type program at Tech and the once respectable Wazzou Price late 90's. and i kinda like Mike.

For Dantonio, it's not hard to understand. He spent three seasons at Cincinnati and then inherited an MSU program that was in shambles. Took some time to build the program and get some quality wins under his belt.

Easy to see how Saban can rack up top 25 wins with LSU and Bama talent. He couldn't hack it at MSU.

I don't think it was he couldn't hack it but that he has no loyalty. Saban is a snake. He only plays the game with a stacked deck (see his NFL tenure).

Saban is a mercenary . . . a damn good one but a mercenary.

Both of those things can be true at the same time. Saban himself complained about the difficulties of recruiting against UM and Ohio State, and playing second fiddle in his own state.

He is a great coach...

...when he doesn't have to face adversity and has access to all the best resources, talent, over-signing, etc.

LSU wasn't exactly all that when Nick got there. in the what Gerry DiNardo era....a guy who won 6 games at Vandy once**. they had been middling for a while in Baton Rouge. not like he inherited a juggernaut.

i don't really like Saban and the move to the NFL and back diminishes BTPCF in a way i don't like....but LSU was pretty average for a long time. this eternal SEC thing being shoved down our throats 24/7 thing is also fairly recent. credit where credit is due, but Spurrier's UF MNC was pretty novel for the almighty SEC, SEC, SEC.

It doesn't take a great coach to win at LSU.

But it takes a total moron to fail.
