Did I ever tell Grief fan...

...that I played tennis with Elmo Wright?
In Houston.

He LOVED tennis.

Played doubles with him once -- and we both hung around with some of the same circle of tennis nuts at this one facility I used to practice at.
We had some conversations, and U of H had put him in some diddly squat gravy train "position" at the school -- just so he'd have a steady income.
At least that is how I could understand it to be.

To be honest, sometimes when he was flapping his gums, I really could not grasp the entire meaning of what he was trying to say.
And every 45 seconds-or-so he'd break out this wide smile, like in the picture, and laff loudly.
And I guess that made it all good somehow.

This is now almost 15 years ago, and at that time, he was a severe lard ass.
Which stunned me at first, when I learned that... this dude was former Grief WR Elmo Wright.
Famous for being one of the first TD dancers.

His larddery came about because of some sort of debilitating hip or back problem which would not allow him to... run.
On the tennis court, he waddled around and never played any singles that I ever saw.
Always just doubles, and he was a potted plant.
But he loved to play -- and he was very jovial and talkative.

Just making a little talk here.
Never mind me.

Carry on...

I remember watching Chris Schenkel doing a University of Houston game back when Elmo was playing. Chris spent quite a bit of time telling the viewers to keep an eye on Elmo if he scored, because he was going to do a touchdown dance. Well, he finally went deep and scored, and proceeded to dance.

I'll never for get Schenkel's commentary.

"There it is! There's that happy jig!"

True fucking story.

Is probably still a better receiver even though he is old and fat, than the scrubs dropping passes from Alex Smith right now.

I might be able to one up this. I stayed at my aunt's in Beverly Hills as a teen. Lots of celebs played at their home. Including close friends Paul Michael Glacier. Yes, this is what he looked like to me, as a young teen.

Looks like an 8-Ball found its way into his nose.
