Clear another space on the mantel: Madison was ranked the most livable small- to mid-size city in the U.S. in a study released Monday by Livability.com.
The website's second annual list of the Top 100 Best Places to Live found Madison topping Rochester, Minnesota; Arlington, Virginia; Boulder, Colorado; and Palo Alto, California for the most livable city in the U.S. Madison and Palo Alto swapped the number one and number five spots from last year's inaugural Livability.com rankings.
Last year's fifth-place finish prompted the formation of a city staff team to try to improve Madison's ranking and make it a better place.
"We didn't add to the city budget," Mayor Paul Soglin said. "We looked at areas involving bicycling, transportation, areas involving equity, where we could within the existing budget and existing framework of the city become better, and that has happened."
Livability editor Matt Carmichael said the study evaluated more than 2,000 cities with populations between 20,000 and 350,000 using more than 40 data points, including economics, housing, infrastructure and education, among others, then weighted them against a survey in which respondents were asked about factors that make their communities better places to live.
He noted that while most cities were thrilled last year to be in the Top 100, Madison instead worked to improve its rank.
"Mayor Soglin, you've gotten your wish. Madison is the number one best place to live in America," Carmichael said.
Other Wisconsin cities making the Top 100 include Eau Claire at number 59 and La Crosse at number 95.

Guess what? Everyone read that shit, and moved here. And guess what? It doesn't dominate those lists anymore, and it takes me an hour and a half to get through town at rush hour.

Not 105, but we've had a late-season blast with about no humidity (be careful what you wish for there, east-of-the-Rockies folk).
Sky was orange all day, since there's a forest fire (not to be confused with benign "wildfires") on the edge of the metro area (maybe 20 miles or so as the crow flies from me). Smells a bit, too (not like a nice campfire, once the smog mixes in.... but SoCals know all about it),
