Geography Help

Post by Dr_Phibes »

Any wizards on the board? I'm trying to find the location of a military outpost in Labrador from the Second World War, does anyone know how to interpret statistical information from archives on latitude, longitude and elevations? Sounds simple but I haven't got a key.

A friend's Dad who served there is getting towards the end but wants to visit the place so it's for a good cause.

Cheers!

Tried everything and I'm pretty good. What I'm looking for is a LORAN station (American acronym) or British - Gee station. I've learned that it was a climate outpost co-opted by the miltary and I've got the data from climate Canada archives.

The problem is, the area was flooded by the construction of the Churchill Dam and it's remote, I'm trying to figure out if the cabins are underwater or not. All the lakenames and geography have completely changed when Newfoundland joined Canada. What I've got from microfiche are:
All
active and discontinued climate stations in Labrador are listed in Appendix A along with
their latitude, longitude, elevation, start date, finish date and observing program.
and
Station #8503630 Sandgirt Lake Latitude: DDMM: 5350 Longitude: DDMM 6530

Start Year:1938
Finish Yaer: 1948

MAT (.C) -4.)
MAR(MM) 467.5
MAS(cm) 350.4
MAP(mm) 830.3
I've tried entering the numbers on LATLONG sites and nothing works.

I'm sure the Germans have all the Kriegsmarine archives on where their subs crashed.

Lefty can likely tell you where you can find this info. I suspect there is some sort of retired military group, probably aviators, that would have charts that could find the spot for you.

BTW, I wasn't aware that Newfoundland wasn't always part of Canada. When did you guys over run them? Do you at least allow the natives to run casinos?
