The Judge was my favorite movies of 2014. I recently rented it and recommend!

I had my doubts whether or not Better Call Saul would be a worthy "prequel" to Breaking Bad. But so far it's pretty fucking good.

I predicted Birdman would get Best Picture because it was about a bunch of actors telling each other how great they are.

It also had a gay love scene.

A few 2014 films I saw...

Boyhood - Cool concept, crappy story. Do people really need to see a 2.5 hour movie about pedestrian life struggles when we all lived it?

The Babadook - Good and original horror/suspense film, proving that good horror is still made everywhere around the globe except the U.S.

Snowpiercer - Action flick which takes place on a train that never stops running. Entertaining but bleak.

The Grand Budapest Hotel - Quirky comedy with an adventurous plot. At only 1 hr 40 mins, it's worth a watch.

Wild - Reece Witherspoon hikes a long ass trail. Lots of flashbacks. Fuck flashbacks.

Gone Girl - Not a chick flick imo as others here have claimed, but also didn't meet the hype. Pretty blah throughout.

That's about it.

But if you're not getting enough gay situations in your viewing diet, try Black Sails, a perfectly silly swashbuckling pirate show set in 1715 in the Bahamas. Sure, lesbos in port and cornholing on the high seas. Basically crap, but hey..or rather..arrrgh!

How about a great book. No bullshit, this one is first rate. It's called Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk, by Ben Fountain. It's about Iraq vets being given a heroes tour around the country after a spectacular fire fight. The culmination of the tour is a presentation at halftime at the Cowboys game. It's funny, poignant, and wonderfully crafted. And has won a variety of awards. you'll really like it.

Agree with The Babadook. Pretty rare for horror to be done the right way, creepy as hell.
Snowpiercer is also very good and the word bleak is spot on.
Haven't seen Gone Girl, will because of David Fincher.

I still stand on Birdman being the best film. A technical marvel, great story and skilled, seamless visuals.
Keaton hit it out of the park. The director merited his award.

Read this on vacation. It's about the world of debt collecting and how the collectors get their “paper”. Interesting read, but you want to take a shower after finishing after you read what happens to some of the people who’s information is bought and sold for pennies on the dollar.



Quick read, nothing earth shattering. Wall St. debauchery, but this time from the hedge fund side of things. Most interesting part was that this guy worked for The Galleon Group before they went belly up in ’09.



Currently reading this, about 100 pages in. Interesting as hell so far.

As a follow up to "The Babadook" on the list of horror films that actually work, another decent title out right now is "What We Do in the Shadows", a spoof of horror films, documentaries, and a sprig of reality t.v. thrown in for good measure. While there is no real story, (think Kids in the Hall or Monty Python) instead it is a series of connected bits stitched together by the 'mockumentary' framing device.

The vamps are old and un-sexy, the antithesis of Twilight drek. The expressions generated by Ben Fransham who plays the Nosferatu vamp, are priceless. It's a fresh take on the genre and very funny, not to mention plenty of gore on tap for taking. I laughed out loud when two vamps take to the air during the "Bat Fight!" bit.

2014 Flicks?

Lucy - a lot of action but very anti-climactic.
The Lego Movie - it was funny, but not worth watching a second time.
3 Days to Kill - again, a lot of action but meh. The daddy daughter relationship was horribly put together on screen.
Heaven is for Real - it was ok. Kind of feel good story if you're a Christian.
Edge of Tomorrow - great action flick, but kind of moved too quickly. Emily Blunt is hot
Guardians of the Galaxy - best movie of 2014 and probably the best in the past 10 years.

Got to be honest here Mgo, that was the top grossing film of 2014, and it wasn't all that close. The movie derived from a very mediocre comic, which made the films success so surprising. Not just that, but it was funny, had a killer soundtrack which played a huge role in the movie, and it was just as inspiring and fresh as Star Wars was back in the day.

Yeah, and Taylor Swift sold the most albums in 2014. When it comes to arts & entertainment, I'm perfectly fine with being in the minority.
