Nimoy wrote two books about his life. One titled "I Am Not Spock" and a later book titled "I Am Spock." In the 2nd book Nimoy explained the title as being his way of indicating he had accepted being identified as Spock by Trek fans and begun to embrace his work on Star Trek. So Spock it was.

Though I did think about going with the classic "He's dead Jim."

He did indeed live long and prospered.

There was this strange nerdy dude in highs school who was infatuated with Spock. He was a pretty good size dude who would roll around putting that "Spock sleeper grip" on people and watched them writhe in pain, while he is hissing " Spock got your asssss".

He set up in the wrong position one day when he did that to a substantially smaller kid, who managed to put a full closed fist backhand right square in the nuts to this dude. Dude doubled over grabbing for his nuts and this other kid just proceeded to beat the fuck out of him. Just kept pounding on him, screaming "This is for me and all the other guys you did this you Vulcan ass Spock mother fucker". Beat dude up good, faced swelled up like a melon. The little guy was the fucking school hero for the next week, the Spock imposter never fucked with him or any one else again.

Rack that memory, that was 40 years ago.

I wonder if Leonard aka Spock knew how to play the ultimate game of logic, chess? My guess is he was good at it. I'd love to have sat across the table from him. There is no luck involved, no random outcome. Just cold, unemotional calculation

Nimoy was an avid chess player and liked to play for relaxation. He talked about it in a 1967 article where he interviewed himself, using the Mr. Spock persona to do the interview. I can link up the interview if you're curious.

I used to have this poster in my dorm room. At the time it was ironic. Now, after 5 years as a non smoker, and seeing plenty of ex-smokers, including Mr. Nimoy, felled by smoking related illnesses I find it very poignant.

What's poignant about it? He was 83 fucking years old.

Most likely, but if we played 10 games I could probably steal 2-3 and maybe a stalemate. A chess player always wants to play someone more advanced so they can learn and get better.

They want to pass out a few lessons as well. I've played thousands of games in my lifetime and won more than I've lost.

I was taught how to play in the 5th grade by a one armed Spanish nun, Sister Mary Lila, who ran a chess club after school for those interested. I will forever be indebted to and grateful for that gentle and patient woman.

Relaxing, as long as you're not using a timer. Whenever my brother and I can get together for a best of 3, clear the room of women and children, this is going to take a few hours.
