The Asus laptop has a virus. I am typing from my iPhone. I should have bought the Mac. I never learned how to use windows 8.1 and could not navigate the thing to save my life. Now I've got this fantastic virus and unless I send them $300 on a prepaid card I will lose everything I have on the computer. All of my pictures, videos, files, etc. are encrypted. I have 96 hours to get the decryption key. Wonderful.

I'm ordering a MacBook air as soon as I get this message posted. Anyone want to fix my sick computer?

$300 is a bargain. Pay them. That's the only way you're getting your files back.

You might try calling A&E Factory Service.

Where did I hear about this before?

Ain't no fixing that one. If files are that important to you, back up your Documents folder (assuming that's where you keep them) on to a thumbdrive or other such media.

And ransomwares are being designed more and more for Macs, since their security is shit.

On the bright side, I'm guessing that Asus has a Windows product key on it. From another computer, download Win 8.1 (assuming you don't have a disk) to a thumbdrive or other USB drive. When you power up the machine, immediately start tapping ESC (I think that brings up the boot menu for an Asus). With the USB drive plugged in (if it has one or more blue USB ports, use one of them -- they're faster), select "boot from USB."

You can now reinstall Windows.

Most of my pictures are backed up, since my precious Vaio died.

Thanks dins, I thought for sure you were going to make fun of me in the worst way.

Right. Just make sure Apple has all your current credit card details and they will "make the bad man go away".

Suitable for housewives, the elderly, the computer illiterate...I suppose.

I am a little concerned that I used the automatic passwords option, even for my bank. My husband said not to do that after the fact. I couldn't figure out how to correct that.

You can still get the data off the Vaio, unless the hard drive itself died.

Everything that's on my phone is also on the cloud. How would they can they ransom me?

Hint 1: an IPhone isn't a Mac.

Hint 2: Your data is backed up (as indicated by the word "also"). Kind of makes ransoming useless, no?

So you think I'm good with all my phone and pad data?

Unless you fall for a phishing scam and vomit up all your passwords and log-in credentials...

No...it's okay, really. Just let her buy a Mac. Then, the clouds will part as a new day dawns and everything plays out like a tampon commercial, with cherubs scattering rose petals across your keyboard.

Marty, aren't you just a ray of sunshine today.

Why would this day be unlike any other?

As long as Marty has his ATM porn vids securely stashed, everyday is full of sunshine.

While not naming names (s'up Goobs?), a few others could be added to that list.

Not that I would know anything about that, this thread is all Greek to me.

:?

Goobs, in a good mood? He's the ultimate grouch.

Marty is the ultimate rock thrower, he wakes up with both fists clenched. You should steer way clear of him, trev. Not to be trusted, no ma'am.

Are you serious? People call me Mr. Sunshine.

I am almost always in a great mood. The grumpy shit is a schtick.
