What alabama really needs... is a salad with a side of brains.

'Q pretty much anywhere in the south is good. Had lots of it in Nashville in the time I was there. I have already discussed The Shed with Sam. That place is the only reason I could ever see going back to Mississippi. Great BBQ and live Blues.

Never been to KC, but have been to Memphis, NC, and Austin. Have to say that Austin had the best in my book. Memphis was just so-so, and NC outright sucked.

Thanks for the heads up Sam..I'll schedule in The Brick Pit the last Saturday of May. I'll be testing out the BBQ cross the southern states and will most likely have a PET. Going to Black's in Loveland TX as well as Franklin's in Austin. I'll be on the I-10 from Jacksonville FLA to Santa Monica CA so if anyone has any suggestions throw them out there. No BBQ in Nawlins though that's gonna be Booze, seafood, and Po-Boys ...

Prolly just a typo, but Blacks is in Lockhart not Loveland. And if you are going to Lockhart to try Blacks might as well do your own taste test and hit Kruez Market as well.

Hit me up when you are in this neck of the woods and I'll buy you a beer or three.

Who in the fuck puts out an itinerary of their vacation 3 months a head of time... down to the day ???

I'll tell you who... AP's "babysitter" from the central valley of California. The last time this guy went on a "roadie" was when he had to go to the "east coast" and grab his mistake and take it home via a u-haul and a transgender note (sup, Bruce Jenner aka... AP)

Psst... look for an engine fire on your rig... right around "Fort Stockton" on your roadie during the summer in West Tejas.

The only thing it's known for... is taking kids from out of state.. and playing football at a junior college (academically).

That, and extremely illiterate fat people.

You've already done that to yourself M. San Francisco may be known for many things, so many rightfully so, but bbq isn't out front and center. The best que comes from the south, end of discussion.

Sam, there are a good number of places here to choose from, but Stacey's is a little hole-in-the wall that looks frightening from outside, but the meats and sauce are ridiculous.

Original location, and yep it's purple.

Never mind some of the BBQ mecca's here, and there are many. Too many to list but here's a few:

Arthur Bryant's
Gates
Jack Stack's
Joe's
Smokehouse

I've got friends, neighbors and co-workers who take their 'que as a religion. I get to sample their wares regularly because they are showoffs and like to brag... and share.

The most prestigious BBQ contest in the world is The American Royal.

KC hasn't earned it's title as The BBQ Capital of the universe by accident.

I can second that. It's out in Dripping Springs. Friend of mine's folks had a ranch out there and a stop at the Salt Lick was always in order for lunch before dropping acid and heading out to Hamilton pool and camping out on the range that night.

Wags, you understandably misunderstood my point, as I view Kansas and Missouri as being technically South, even though they are really Central America states. No doubt that those two states represent with some amazing bar-be-cue. My point was really a counter to M2's idiot claim of San Francisco 'cue.

No need to roll your eyes, you guys have great representation.

Yep, Stacey is authentic and his place is certainly got that dive vibe on the outside. He has since opened a new location in a strip mall that is certainly clean and small, but thankfully the food remains the same. It's been a couple of years since I drove by the Indian School and 16th Street purple box, but I think it's gone now. That great smoker of his has survived though.

Only a tard on the level of stoolio would try to argue cali being a BBQ destination.

The south rules BBQ. EOS.

And Sam is right. A BBQ joint outside appearance is inversely proportional to the 'Q quality. If the place looks like it should be condemned, it likely has good 'Q. If it looks well kept or worse yet, chain-like, they are spending their money in the wrong place.

Such as it is, the best location for Cali 'Q is Santa Maria though it isn't technically BBQ.

I guess I'm going to a new Q place for lunch. I'll report back (if I feel like it). It's actually in Vancouver (Across the Creek in the Couv. Hope I don't get shanked by a tweeker).

The U&L has Q, some of it quite good. But it ain't like there's one on every corner -- you have to look for it (and oddly enough, most seem to be run by transplants from the South/KC).

In Southern Oregon, they take the Q pretty seriously. Just not enough of a population that it's on anyone's radar. But they take it pretty seriously, and use lots of madrone (we call it "madrona" in the northern part of the state), which is wonderful smoking wood. Not nearly so common up here, but I know a couple of spots where I can pluck some on an occasion.

Copper Top BBQ on 395 outside of Bishop is as good as any BBQ in the U.S. if not better.

And mvs is right. Santa Maria style BBQ is not BBQ. It's great but it's grilling.

I figured you were taking that angle but just because Mizzou joined the SEC doesn't mean we consider ourselves Southerners. No offense to the south, but we proudly consider ourselves as 'flyover' country and want to keep it that way.

And while I can grill a nice T-bone, in no way do I measure up to any of the folks I know who take their BBQ seriously. I don't even try and why should I? Not a week goes by that one of the boys at work doesn't bring in slabs of ribs or brisket where the meat falls of the bone and melts in your mouth.
