Bear with me here.

I have a neighbor that died yesterday at age 82. Knew him since I moved here in 93, and you could not have found a more amiable, genuinely friendly man. I would grow beans and red potatoes, tomatoes(I fucking hate tomatoes, but grow them well) and take them to him and his wife Joyce, of 58 years.

Bob Nielsen. Just a retiree that loved his dachshunds and a perfect, I mean PERFECT yard.

You think you know someone:

Raised in an orphanage in Chicago from the fourth grade on, he joined the Air Force, was commissioned and became a pilot.
He flew over 1000 combat hours over Vietnam and won 14 awards, including the Distinguished Flying Cross.

After 22 years in service, he THEN got a B.A. in accounting and became an auditor??????? for 22 years(No one trying to kill you, I guess, was the draw).

That is 6 months, MONTHS of time(in 8 hour days) in the air in COMBAT!!!!!!! in Vietnam air space. Holy...........shit.

This nation needs about 100 million men just like him.

RACK him, and you for service, my friend.

Hey Rog, sounds like you were privileged to have a good neighbor, friend and a man who cared for his country. I plan on leaving Illinois soon and I hope there's a veteran or two among my new neighbors. As to Vietnam, a ground pounder like myself enjoyed nothing more than watching an air strike while wading thru some deep shit.
