Funny that this was a topic for discussion at a sport's official's forum that I read. If I'm plate umpire there, that catcher would be sitting on the bench for the rest of the game. Fortunately, I never saw anything like that in any of my games, and I've been doing it since 1957.

What does the rule book actually say?

Is there anything says that the catcher must cede the plate in cases where it is obvious that there is no play?

Common courtesy says you take a step forward and let the runner pass, but since when has common courtesy had anything to do with the rule book?
