class action lawsuits---what's going on here?

OK. Every once in a while you get a postcard in the mail telling you that you may get some money as a result of a class action law suit. My most recent one deals with Papa John's being sued because they may have wrongly charged sales tax on delivery charges. If I file a claim (get this), I'm eligible for a $2 to $12 purchase discount to use in any participating Papa John's in Florida, subject to certain conditions. Well whoop-de-fucking do!!
OK, lawyer guys (88 et al), what's really going on? In my mind a lawyer or firm sees some sort of "wrong", gets a shill to file a class action law suit, and shops for a sympathetic judge. The "members of the Class" get maybe $5 each, the lawyers get maybe $5 million ??? Is that how it works, or am I being too conspiracy minded?
I wait for input.

It's to set an example or precedent not to do it again.

Or for the lawyer money.

I can see it possibly if the corporation is skimming for profit, but in this case, the state of Florida gained revenue, not Papa John's. Wondering how many lawyer/firms are lining their pocket with what smells like a shake down scheme.

In this case, who gained from it is regardless. Papa Johns is directly responsible for costing customers money.

Make no bones about it, lawyers are the big winners in class actions. However, big companies can do some really shitty things to their customers. As scummy as they seem, class actions serve a purpose.

Didn't Papa John's get busted for wage theft? It's a shitbag franchise with a shitbag CEO that serves god awful pizza.

There's one a stone's throw from my house. Tried it once... never again. Makes Domino's seem like fine dining.

Gee, I wonder which one that could possibly be. Probably the biggest law firm down here ("for the people" don't you know) tried to get themselves a governor elected. Fortunately the majority of folks who voted denied them that. BTW--88, you're in patent law right? I found the National Geographic series on "American Genius" fascinating stuff. The one about David Sarnoff and Philo Farnsworth and the patent on TV was quite a story. Wright Brothers/Glen Curtiss, Tesla (the genius inventor not the car)/ Edison were also a lot about patents.

Exactly. And they should be euthanized for doing as such, too.
So should the Koch brothers be euthanized as well?

Sorry 88, but I had to laugh. Picturing this old guy checking out, slumped in his office chair with T1B on his computer screen.
Yeah, check out those NatGeo series.
