They should bring these back. I just want to know why every player from the 70s looked like a 42 year old dude who works in the lumber section of Home Depot.

Yes, pregame intros were cool. Shouldn't be that complicated to completely omit the 2 time Heisman winner though. Michigan didn't have a ton of future NFL'ers on that O squad....
I miss Keith Jackson calling games :(

I sure don't. Maybe it is because he was horrible at play by play by the time I was old enough to know what was good and what was crap.
Give me Ron Franklin.

I love the look on Griffin's face when he hears another guys name. Only the most accomplished players in the history of the game. Easy to overlook.

Great thread, and they should most certainly bring back this style of intro...
What's with the fucking encyclopedias the UM TE from Kentwood is using as shoulder pads? Jesus H Christ.
Too funny...

WOW! So of course I heard the name "Cornelius Green of Washington DC" and I looked him up. Apparently he was OSU's first balck QB, and he was amazing at that. He was also former Rose Bowl MVP according to WUSA-TV. As of late 2014, he is asst football coach at St Albans, which is one of the elite DC prep schools.

Screw - he has been our guest speaker for our local Alumni chapters golf outing twice now (Cornelius). He has some GREAT stories about Woody, Archie, etc. Great guy...I provided the transportation for him to and from the golf course and from he airport and hearing these stories and what he has to say is unreal.
Yes, he coaches middle school football and I think is a varsity assistant in basketball for St. Alban's
good stuff

To this day ... that little no talent midget was handed Heisman Trophy #2 by the east coast sports writers/bias because they thought it would make a great story to have a two time Heisman Trophy winner.
When EVERYONE in the country knew it belonged to the best player in the country (Chuck Muncie) and Heisman runner-up.
Chuck's stats that year absolutely CRUSHED Archie Griffin's
Chuck was Bo Jackson and a better version... before espn came around.
To this day... I've NEVER seen a better college football running back.

Oh yeah, he was voted the best player in college football by just about everyone in the sports media.
To this day... college football fans that watched that season can't stop laughing when they gave the "thief-man" to the midget in Columbus .

Nope, just loved the way he called a game. On top of that the color guy didn't have to correct every fifth thing he said.

Probably doesn't give Halloween candy to brown skinned kids looking for a handout.

On his best day, Ron Franklin is pedestrian.
I think Jeannine Edwards would agree. Right, sweet baby?

And Beno Cook was college football prior to Jackson. Doesn't mean I want to listen to him.
Franklin was just smooth. Dude could easily do a game by himself, where Jackson would be lost and viewers pissed off if he didn't have someone to correct his mistakes.

I can't remember ever hearing Beno do play-by-play. Thankfully.
Loved Keith Jackson. Great personality and down home commentary.
Never particularly cared for Franklin. Didn't hate him, he was just nothing special. Not too smart either. Ergo, his exit from ESPN.

Because he didn't. I don't know where Hefty pulled that out of his ass.

I understand he wasn't a play by play guy. But if someone is going to claim Jackson WAS college football then Beano certainly was at one point as well. He convinced ABC to rearrange game schedules based on his thoughts of who would be good. The best known of those was likely the 1969 Arkansas and Texas game which was moved to Dec 1st.
Just because someone is given a moniker doesn't mean they are a good listen, as a play by play guy, a studio guy, radio etc.

I recommend extending the 24 hour rule prior to your next flight.

The number you were looking for is 12, but I get your point.
Bottom line Keith wasn't all that IMO. Certainly not worth the Godlike status so many of you give him.

It's not just us that think he was one of the best. ABC assigned him to their primary national game of the week for many years.
In 1999, the National Football Foundation awarded Jackson the Gold Medal Award, its highest honor. The same year he was inducted into the Rose Bowl Hall of Fame for his many years of contribution to "The Granddaddy of Them All". The Edward R. Murrow School of Communication at Washington State University awarded their alumnus with the Murrow Award for top leaders in the communication industry in 1999; Jackson was a charter member of the WSU Foundation, founded in 1979, provided scholarship money to the Murrow School and chaired the fund-raising drive for the school's alumni center. In 1994, Jackson was inducted into the American Sportscasters Association Hall of Fame. On April 24, 1995, he was inducted into the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association Hall of Fame, having won its National Sportscaster of the Year five successive times. The American Football Coaches Association awarded him its Amos Alonzo Stagg Award in 1993 as an individual "whose services have been outstanding in the advancement of the best interests of football." He was the first sports announcer to receive the Stagg award.
Longtime Penn State Head Coach Joe Paterno said of Jackson: "I don't think you could say that there is any one person who is not a coach, athletic director or administrator who has done more for college football than Keith Jackson". Michigan Head Coach Lloyd Carr described Jackson as "a symbol of all the good things in college football".
I can't think of a better college play-by-play guy that I've seen in my lifetime. I'm no Wolfman, but that covers a lot of years. I googled best college football announcers. Here's the first two links that popped up:
Number one on both is Keith Jackson. Best. Ever. Your opinion is definitely in the minority.

So a guy who covers up child molestation thinks Jackson is great. Sorry if that doesn't hold much weight.

Hell, who listens to the announcers anyway? I watch the game...their voices are background noise.
But Jackson's voice was perfect for the college game.
BTW, Ricky Bell rushed for far more yardage than either Griffin or Muncie in '75.
College football hates USC though and Bell finished third in Heisman voting in 75
Griffen scored 4 TDs and won the heisman, that's a joke
Chuck had the most ALL-PURPOSE yards in College football that year... and Cal had the best offense in country... and CRUSHED... # 3 U$C... by 2 touchdowns.
Archie Griffin was handed 'the Heisman'... by the east coast media .
Oh yeah, that was the best offense I've ever seen in College Football... along with the best quarterback Cal has EVER had (sorry, Aaron)... even Barry Switzer (while having the # 1 or 2 team in the country year in and year out back in the day... agreed with me).
"He's the best I've seen as a coach."
"Roth is the best I've faced as a coach. None of the others had such a quick delivery with such a great arm while throwing such a soft ball – all of his should be caught. I'll bet he's never been harassed so much, but he kept getting up and hitting his receivers. We took away his deep stuff, but he still hurt us. I could tell he was hurting at the end of the game, but he kept going."
Barry knew what just a few knew in College Football... not even his teammates.
He was about to die due to cancer in just a couple of months...
Joe Roth
Keith Jackson (sup, left seater)... on Joe Roth back in the day...

Fine. Set aside Paterno's comment. Now go ahead and refute everything else in there.
Whether you like him or not, Keith Jackson is universally regarded as one of the great broadcasters of our time.

Franklin was good, but Jackson and Nessler are my favorite CFB p-b-p guys. They are/were, hands down, the best at their craft in the sport.
