UP PET

Spent some time in the central part of Michigan's Upper Peninsula over the past few days. The fall colors hadn't yet peaked -- I was a week too early -- but were still deece in some areas. The weather changed about every five minutes, which is par for the course up there. From my time there, the temps ranged from the mid 40s to the low 70s.

Mackinac Bridge
Image

Just before the bridge in the lower peninsula is Mackinaw City. If you're old and you like fudge, you'll probably love Mackinaw City.

Wienerlicious. One of the fine dining establishments in the area.
Image

The town of Munising, about a 2.5 hour drive northwest after you cross the bridge. The home of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore where I spent some time hiking.
Image

Driving to the shore.
Image

About a 5 mile walk through the woods to get to the lake shore.

Lake Superior. Note the lack of earth curvature. Hmmm.

Trail gets pretty close to the edge. Probly wouldn't want to do this drunk.

Marquette, the largest city in the UP. Watched some college football here. It's a pretty cool town with several bar/restaurant options though this pic doesn't really show it.

Heading to Tahquamenon State Park in Paradise, MI, 2.5 hrs east of Marquette.

Nice pics.

We're still in the 90s here, a non-global warming mid-October heat wave.

Here's our fall color:

Beautiful pics, Mgoo.

Wonder how long before the usual left coast scenery snobs chime in to yawn at it. Those cliffs are pretty cool. You should jump off one and get it on video.

Yeah that seems like a really good plan.

Jump off one of those cliffs, then swim back to the beach and climb right out.

If the bridge pic doesn't bring a certain someone back... probly safe to assume he's dead.

You're not who I was talking about mikey. Your pics are cool as they have a bit of comedy added. The rest of you left coast douchebags should take notes, except for toolio. You should just kill yourself by whatever method works.

Yeah, you'd think Mgo could at least find an archive pic of that bridge with some fog enshrouding (is that a word?) the towers.

I made the assumption his uhhh, partner would come along and get it on video. Just make sure he has your login info ahead of time. The jump off that cliff could be your last. There must be some places there where the locals/really stupid tourists can jump off and survive. How deep is the water? How many miles would you have to swim to find a point along shore where you can climb out?

Cell phone cameras don't capture height very well, those cliffs are higher than they appear there. You go over that edge, you're most likely gonzo. Even if you survive the splat there's really no place to swim to, and even if there is, hypothermia is gonna set in soon.

Great PET. I was up in the UP for a day a few summers ago and it was excellent. I'll have to make sure to make a longer trip there next time.

Beautiful country!

I would figure the mention of Weinerlicious and fudge would have Toolio running to this thread with pics of The Castro District.

They capture it well enough. I would guess that the trees on top are typical 60-80 ft tall trees, so the cliffs must be north of one hundred feet.

Marquette has a population of around 22,000. It's in a nice setting and there's enough going on downtown that you can bar hop and have a good time. It's a mix of locals and tourists. It's also home to Northern Michigan University. If you need skyscrapers and 50 different brewpubs then it's probably not the place for you. I could live there.

Looks to be at least as high or more then the Golden Gate Bridge where people jump to off themselves. Now, if only mstoolio and Ltard could take a lovers-leap... Win-Win.

Nice PET, btw.

It was 73 degrees when I left yesterday afternoon. The only thing that's for certain is Dec, Jan, Feb, and most of March, are going to be brutal. Personally, I think it's good to live in a place that weeds out the weather pussies/pussies in general.

Perfect! I'm free this weekend!

You're not too high maintenance for the Comfort Inn, right? I'm kinda cheap.

Or we can just "rough it" in the woods.

If by "at least," you meant "a fraction," then you're right.

Nice PET, MaGoo.

I drove over the Appalachians today... leaves were just starting to turn. But unlike yours, my few pics totally suck.

A "fraction" is possible for any comparison not being equal.

For example: The Golden Gate Bridge is the most popular suicide spot in the world on average, people jump from the bridge once every two weeks. A person jumping from the highest point on the bridge will drop 245 feet before plunging into the frigid San Francisco Bay waters below. The impact from that fall kills 98 percent of all jumpers.

So how many feet off are you talking there dins?

I doubt it's more than 150' or so, but without perspective or standard objects to compare, we're getting into poptart territory, so I'll just let it go.

So those trees on top of the cliffs are all 5 to 10 feet tall? When Mg0 was walking through the cliff trail, they certainly looked a lot taller.

No, you are getting into back pedal territory, especially trying to discredit me with pops... go ahead and bail.

Don't know about that, it sounds great till you've done it (not that I have). But living in a place like that, you're on your own in winter, you're not going anywhere. You'd most likely go a bit wonky.

I think dins is pretty close at 150'. Doubt it is quite GGB high. Mgoo, it is your scientific duty to jump off and have someone video it. We can have poptart or one of the other board scientist calculate the height.
