My wife was born in Cuba and came to the states at the age of 9. I would like to check it out, but as far as I can tell you still have to do one of those tour packages. Not much leeway to explore and find old family on those I'm afraid.

My barber that i've been going to for about 20 years is from Cuba. He occasionally shows me pics of beautiful white sand beaches. On the few occasions I've had to go into another shop to get cleaned up quick before a trip or meeting I get pissed when they ask me what number or some other crap, fuck if I know. I go to my regular guy, sit down, he cuts my hair right.

Loads of times, I could give you a few tips, but not sure what restrictions on travel still exist/will exist for Americans over the next while. If you're not restricted to Varadero stay in Havana, the city is on steroids. It's more money but an assault on your senses (in a good way). For resort, beach thingies - stay in Varadero. Depends what you want out of it.

Been twice. Havana is worth a few days. Hit the Hotel De Nacional. Buy a box of Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure Especial in the humidor in the basement. Try and make it to Vinales Valley north of Havana and Mazantas to the south. Summer is hella hot and not a ton of AC. Plan on late nights no matter the time of year, and music... lots of music.
And don't bring sand to the beach.

Book through the nearest Canadian city and pay $1,200 total, just have them stamp a piece of paper other than your passport. They're not adverse to that.
