Louisiana governor: Budget crisis threatens future of college sports

Facing a budget crisis, Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards says higher education in the state could be compromised. And that includes the possibility of college athletics in Louisiana being canceled.

In a statewide televised address Thursday, Edwards said campuses could run out of money and be forced to shut down in April, highlighting the LSU football team as one program that could be lost as a result of massive cuts to higher education funding.

"If you are a student attending one of these universities, it means that you will receive a grade of incomplete, many students will not be able to graduate, and student-athletes across the state at those schools will be ineligible to play next semester," Edwards said, according to The Times-Picayune. "That means you can say farewell to college football next fall."

The Democratic governor is pushing for tax increases to help make up a $940 million budget deficit by the end of June. He said Louisiana could be forced to cut vital health services as well.

"These are not scare tactics. This is reality," Edwards said. "An unstable state budget will not only hurt children and working families in our state, it will devastate communities, businesses and local government as well."

Some Republicans are unhappy with the size of the governor's proposed tax increases, the newspaper reports.

"Gov. Edwards is proposing to implement the largest tax increase in the history of Louisiana," treasurer John Kennedy said in a rebuttal. "It will wreck our economy, already fragile."

If lawmakers find a solution to keep colleges open and save the Tigers' 2016 season, the state will face a similar problem the following fiscal year, when Louisiana faces a $2 billion budget shortfall, according to The Times-Picayune.

Now that's one fucking smart southern politican. Never mind appealing to the voters sense of goodwill, just threaten to kneecap an SEC program.

Actually he's a fucking dumbass.

Most SEC schools feed off of the revenues from sports.

That must be why the players locker room at LSU looks like a palace and the academic buildings are blighted eyesores.

Meanwhile next door in Texas the R's haven't lost a state wide election in decades and the rainy day fund which is the state's surplus fund / savings account has grown from a few hundred million when Ma Richards left office to 11 Billion. In fact it has reached its cap and now the surplus is being applied to other funds including a debt retirement fund and a safety net specifically for Teacher Retirement.

So LA's problems likely have more to do with inept or crooked LA politicians than political party.

So, two receivers applied for transfer when y'all hired Dameyune Craig.

Enjoy the coach that tried to cover for Duke Williams.

Nice offseason.

so, you are saying it's cool, a measure of success when the government has 11 billion tax payer dollars to apply to social funds like high school teachers and debt repay that individuals accrued by their own choices?

doesn't sound very libertarian, Reagan hooray "R", to me.

I think it is fiscal responsibility, something Washington could learn from. While I might not agree with the way the teacher retirement system works, these people were promised something. Now the entire thing should be changed for teachers who are just starting out and who have less than 10 years of service. But making sure our obligations are paid is the correct thing to do.

Sometimes it is a good idea to spend some money. Like when you're ranked 39th in education.

Sometimes it is a good idea to read the article you link to. Then, you can educate yourself on the difference between "39th" and "43rd."

I think Oregon took a big jump and got out of the #49 rut they've been stuck in. Back when I was in school, we were in the running for #1 every year. But then, the public unions expanded, and hitched their wagon to a certain political party. At that point, they decided it was a "good idea to spend some money." And spend, they did -- on public employee pensions (that mere mortals could only dream of).

Spent our way from #1 to #49, with little hope in sight.
