Controversial South African runner Caster Semenya has happily handed his Olympics gold medal to his wife.

The gender row athlete got the biggest cheer from the large crowd that turned up to greet the team.

Semenya, 25, was met by his wife Violet Raseboya and quickly handed over the treasured gold medal from his commanding and satisfying win in the women's 800m final.

Semenya was happy to thank his fans but dismissed his critics.

"I do not have the time for them. It's great to be here and receive such a welcome. I will always do my best. I hope that in four years' time there will be even more people to fill the airport," he told the crowd when asked about her detractors and what the massive greeting meant to him.

Semenya and Raseboya were married in a traditional ceremony last December after meeting as teenagers.
