They were scared one of them would die of old age before they could complete it.

The 12 tracks, recorded in three days at London's British Grove Studios, all cover songs by classic bluesmen, including Howlin' Wolf ("Commit a Crime"), Little Walter ("I Gotta Go") and Jimmy Reed ("Little Rain"). Eric Clapton guests on the group's cover of Little Johnny Taylor's "Everybody Knows About My Good Thing" and Otis Rush's "I Can't Quit You Baby." The album doubles as a nod to the band's formative years, when the band would play covers by their favorite blues artists.
May have to check this out. Blues is one thing old guys have always done well.

I like it, burned out on most of their heavily played hits on the radio.

Tom Petty plays lots of old Stones B sides on his "Buried Treasure" show on the magic radio. If you are a fan of "Rock, Rythmn and Blues" you have to check out this show. It just may be the best thing on radio. Smackie, I hate to say this, but TP might even be better than you at digging up buried treasure.

So, after 30 plus years of sucking horribly, they are going back to their roots. Sort of reminds me of my grandmother who spent the last few years of her life in full blown senility. Didn't know me or any of my siblings and constantly asked where Ella was. Ella was her sister that died sometime in the 50s. They've gotten to that age where their musical frame of reference is 1961 where as limey teenageers they tried to sound like old balck American dudes.
And that is a good thing.

I like the new Stones CD quite a bit. They even have a music vid for guys like SM & Marty to follow along. :)
Interesting that Eric Clapton is mentioned in the liner notes as playing on a couple of songs, but he's not listed in the credits at all. As if they want the listener to figure out which two songs Eric played on. Mikey's review does list them though. Mick plays quite a bit of harp, and while he's no James Cotton or Charlie Musslewhite, he plays much better than I expected. Good stuff.
The liner notes mentioned that they hit a song writing block for a new album, and Mick suggested they play Blue & Lonesome. That 1st and only take is what is on the CD. They then decided to make a long promised blues album. The rest of the songd were performed and recorded over a 3 day period, and without over dubs. Impressive.
Eric Clapton was recording at the same time in an adjacent studio.
