So JSC and others claimed the GOP...

was in dire straights and was ready to fall apart. There are plenty more quotes along these lines:
However, I would argue that the Democratic party is much closer to implosion than is the GOP. Looking back on the time since Obama took office the Dems have lost control of both the House and the Senate. They have lost 904 seats in state Legislatures, the GOP now holds 56% of the state legislative seats, a 12% increase for them since Obama has been in office. Dems have lost 11 governors seats as well since Obama took office. (This is post the 2016 elections in which Dems gained 6 seats in the House, but most expected to take control of.)
1/3rd of the Dems seats in the House are from three states, California, Massachusetts and New York. In fact California accounts for more than all of the difference in the popular vote going Hillary's way. When you add in MA and NY, you have more than 10% of her total votes.
Instead of discussing why there is this historic shift away from the Democratic party their leaders, vocal supporters, and some in the media want to claim it is due to racist homophobes. Those type of takes are going to do nothing to help the Dems counter their losses. Further if this was actually true, voters in the Midwest would have to have become racist in the last 4 years since many of those who voted for Trump this year voted for Obama in the last two elections.
Will the Dems change this anytime soon or will they keep on the same path and continue to move more and more to the left? Will they make changes like Bernie or will they continue to double down on folks like Pelosi?
