Today the White House reversed their position and are supporting women registering with selective service. This is long overdue. If women are going to be allowed into "prime" rolls in the military such as fighter pilots and ship command then they need to have access the all roles. And if they are going to have access to all roles then they should be required to register with selective service.

Agreed. Now what they need to do is institute mandatory service, or at least require a minimum percentage of the armed forces to be draftees with no exemptions for rich kids, during combat actions.
That would reduce the chances of getting into any ridiculous unsinkable quagmires.

If I'm correct, Duncan Hunter proposed this during markup, and Obama and Ash Carter through a big hissy fit over during campaign season. Then once the election ends (and Hillary loses), they conveniently reverse course and support the requirement.

So, when our country got attacked in 2001, we fired off that selective service and started drafting people willy-nilly. Am I remembering that right? All those new enlistees were drafted, right?

How about we err on the side of freedom, and do away with registration for everyone? (Probably save a few bucks in the process.)


I'd love to see the Standing Army (I forget what the Federalist Papers/Founders said about them... something about "use it or lose it," or some such shit) reduced to almost nil, while staying ahead on technology.

Side note -- the USA has been bombed from (not "by") a plane exactly once. Brookings, Oregon (nowheresville, South Coast, just north of the California border... amazing town, all old people), 1942. Nobuo Fujita was the guy in charge. His name came up in a local article (real Oregonians know who he is). Fascinating man and story. In a nutshell, he tried to burn Oregon down with firebombs to open a path for invasion (or the threat of invasion to divert Navy forces back towards our own coast). Unfortunately for him, his plan came to fruition right after a rare summer rainstorm, so the massive forest fire kinda fizzled. They also tried to come up the Columbia River (likely as another distraction). They also did the same shit at Pacific City, or thereabouts... until the old codger WWI vets who were too old to go to war saw them coming, and started lobbing rounds from their 30-30's at the invaders offshore, and created an impenetrable wall of lead (there's a Springfield Rifle Museum in Tillamook to commemorate their deed).

WAR -- little known history. Nobuo Fujita's story is fascinating, and worth checking out. Dude came to Brookings after the war to apologize, and brought a family heirloom as a gift.
