I'll be seeing this same scene play out 1000 times on a10 mile drive that would have taken an hour in Friday traffic without the doucheflakes. Portland has a new mayor who has vowed that the anti-democracy protesters won't be allowed to block the freeways or commuter train tracks, that sounds like a hollow promise -- the Portland popo are grossly understaffed, and they're expecting tens of thousands of people marching in the streets*...

So, in short -- I'm hosed. Too bad all the ice is gone, that would have made it funny.

What's sad is that so many people seem to get a real kick out of watching pathetic losers make fools of themselves. Makes them somehow feel superior, I guess.

I went to some protest marches back in the eighties. I went with one because it was against the Klan and fuck them. It didn't hurt that I was going with people I knew and there would be a sea of substances to ingest. This march was in Philadelphia.

When we got there it was a sea of fucking anarcho socialists, Marxist-Leninists, Maoists, and flag burners. Some people who obviously didn't know how to listen to directions got arrested. On the Klan side, they were represented by very confused skinheads from Baltimore who said they were down there just to support their Klan brothers. On the rooftops you could see men in suits taking pictures of the crowds below.

It was the total freak scene so we went back to where the buses were and found bar in the neighborhood and drank as much as we could in the 45 minutes we had before the buses got the fuck out of town.

On the way back, some douchenozzle tried to tell some girls that they shouldn't drink Bacardi, because it was involved in oppression of Puerto Rican people. That should have sent me over the top but it didn't. I had a six pack of Black Label tall necks and I paid no mind while the girls tried to explain that didn't mean to hurt people in Puerto Rico.

I went back a year later with some friends because this time it was in The District and I'd never been to The District. The exact same fucking people were at this demonstration too. Same scene, same losers. That's when I swore off going to those events.

I went to a huge anti-Vietnam War rally in Golden Gate Park. Mostly because these two girls were going.

Same reason I joined Young Life for a while.

The new mayor did a better job than the last idiot, for sure. Told the cops that no one was to block the trains, no one was to cross the river to the East Side, and as soon as there was any vandalism or violence, all bets were off. Pretty much told them to stick to Pioneer Square, and let everyone else get on with their life and business.

Buncha little snowflakes took teargas rounds right to the fucking face. I guess some of these entitled little shits need an occasional reminder that they're not quite as tough as they think they are.

American anarchists seem a bit wimpish from what I've seen. Canadian and English ones are harder and more feisty. They expect to get nicked and just carry on till they do.

Pure awesomeness.

There's a "women's march" in rainy downtown Portland today, and the turnout is quite impressive -- somewhere in the 30-40,000 range. And since they were coming from all over, and parking downtown absolutely sucks on a good day, all were encouraged, and did use public transit (buses, light rail).

And the next part of their plan... and you just can't make this stuff up...

their activities downtown have shut down the... public transit.

We're looking at a real bunch of einsteins here.

Btw, I find "protesters blocking train tracks" pretty much at the top of the easily solved mayoral problems list. Tell the train operator there's a little something extra in their checks for each score. Send the family of the train chock a bill for the cleanup. Same goes for roadblock protestor asshole. I would take the PD's oldest cruisers, weld up some cow protestor catchers and have them standby on the ready. In the name of fiscal responsibility, I would tell the officers that protestor sweeping duty would be on a voluntary basis. Can't be paying these dudes OT for something they'd do for fun.
