Haven't seen any good mudslide stories from socal this winter. I would think you'd have quite a good run of them. Or has everything that is prone to sliding already slid?

This one closed Highway 17 (the main route from San Jose to Santa Cruz) a couple of weeks ago.

Amtrak was closed for awhile in MS's neighborhood due to a mudslide.
There no doubt were a few in Malibu but they don't even talk about those anymore

Hwy 41 just outside Yosemite's south entrance is closed both ways.
Hwy 120 on west side of Yosemite is closed as well.
Hwy 140 is the only highway currently open to get in or out of the national park.

Highway 41 near its western terminus.

That's not the closure I was referring to.
The one I was referring to was near Fish Camp. That looks like it's south of Coursegold.

I assumed most of the mud slides were post fire issues. But in half of those photos there is plenty of green matter. Is the soil just that unstable?

I don't think any of those are Fire related. Just too much water on the road cuts.

Do they do any soil retention prevention on road cuts or is the cost too much for what is gained?

We've had 18 buhzillionteen seventy thousand slides around here.
I-5 in SW Washington was closed a few days ago. A couple of the main routes from the West Side into Portland have had major slides. None due to fire. When the soil gets saturated, certain spots where the water drains cut loose. Just the way it is. Get the geologists to take a look, bust out some bulldozers, dump it somewhere, and we all move on.
Here, where there's an unstable slope that doesn't let go, they wait until the dry season, then dig a bigass trench at the bottom of the hill, then take a bunch of the scree, put it in these funny chain-link boxes, and use it for a barrier between the trench and the road. Gives the slide a place to go. They're all over the place.

They build concrete retaining walls here... except in the sticks. Then they do the big ditch thing.

They do that rocks in a cage thing around here sometimes, usually at the base of a rocky vertical cut.

Did you see any bad hombres?

CDM and La Jolla Shores are the two nicest beaches in SoCal. Both are in very high bucks areas. My best friend in college grew up in CDM and we used to hang out there a lot back in the 70s. It was a lot less crowded back then.

Now it's not only more crowded, but they charge for parking there, too.

Can't find that exact spot, but a group of homes overlooking the beach in Corona Del Mar run $11-22 million.

My friend's parents' house is up the hill a couple of blocks east of PCH. Built in the 60s and not nearly as spectacular as those mansions on the beach but still has basically 180 degree ocean view. Not a bad investment at the time for a college professor.
