The dems have nothing here.
Sessions met Russian officials in his duties as a Senator.
There is no evidence that he met as a "Trump surrogate".
If there is anything he was guilty of, it was that he probably should have clearified during Senate questioning that he had met the Russkies as part of his job as a Senator.

First off, Sessions is not an idiot.
That said, why didn't he answer the question as asked? Why wasn't he up front in response to Franken's question? If he worked on the Trump campaign from early on & met with a Russian official during that time (the Russian Ambassador counts as a Russian official). why didn't he admit to that to head such questioning in the past? Franken blew it by not following up with either asking the same question again or (better) directly asking if he had met w/ any Russian officials during his time working in the campaign. But Sessions is smart enough to know where the question that was asked was heading. He chose not to directly answer it. The fact that he didn't & had met with a Russian official during the campaign merits an investigation by an independent prosecutor.

Bill Clinton Gave Misleading Answers Under Oath. Here's What Jeff Sessions Thought About That
As a Senator from Alabama, Sessions argued that Clinton’s artfully hedged statement under oath that he did not have a sexual relationship with Monica Lewinsky — which was untrue in the plain English reading — was perjury and grounds for removal from the office.
"I have no doubt that perjury qualifies under the Constitution as a high crime," Sessions said in September 1998, according to an Associated Press article from the time. "It goes to the heart of the judicial system."
Today, Sessions has come under fire for saying under oath that he did not communicate with the Russian government during the 2016 campaign, despite having met privately with the Russian ambassador to the United States in September.

He should go. Unfortunately he won't as there is plenty of precedent where lying under oath means nothing.

Politics is a nasty business. Most lie at some point. It's part of the job, it seems.

The comparison to Clinton is moronic. There was a context to the question. He was asked if he had contact with them in the role of surrogate. It would have been wise to throw in that he met them in a senator role, but this is does not mean he lied. It's not like he had a private clandestine meeting in a private plane on the tarmac. As you said, he isn't stupid and he knows that his meeting was public. He never made any attempt to hide it.
