Brave New World. That is where we seem to be heading, or at least there are many who think it is a good idea. If you have read both 1984, Brave New World, and Brave New World Revisited as I have, you can see what could be in store for humanity. I'm glad I've lived my life in the time and place that I have. I can only hope my grandchildren's generation are able to do it also. They'll have to ignore the Zuckerbergs of the world.

Dr. Zuckerberg's proposal is to provide every person in this country with a "universal basic income" check each month in an amount sufficient to pay for their shelter, clothing, food, transportation, child care and health care needs. With this "cushion", every person could pursue their entrepreneurial endeavor and enrich the lives of others.

Funny thing about that proposal, though. We already have a segment of the population that receives a basic income check, food stamps, Section 8 housing, public transportation, school lunches, child care services, publicly funded/subsidized health care etc. And that segment of our population provides absolutely nothing whatsoever in terms of entrepreneurial activity that benefits the rest of society. In fact, that segment of society is entitled to grants to attend college, and in many cases receives preferences on the basis of diversity. Yet, few choose to pursue the education opportunities provided. Go figure.

I think Dr. Zuckerberg would be better off if he spent his billions trying to find or develop a unicorn that could gallop through the land and shit happiness and equality.

Ask a man how easy it is to get public assistance.

Everything you've listed has to do with babies, school aged children and child-bearing females -- 2 of those groups aren't adults and cannot enter into adult business contracts.

Zuckerberg is trying to tell you something about the direction of the world.

There is no housing in this particular state. No one is going to stuff 30 Mexicans in a hut, because there are 30 family members who need that shelter, and need the jobs the Mexicans would come up for.

There is no industry except those relating to natural resources. Ask why.

There are severe roadblocks to employment relating to supply, demand, education, criminal background and substance abuse here that prevent facile handwaves like your own. Handwaves which are the middle-class equivalent, by the way, of Mitt Romney's comment about why the poor don't ask their parents to foot them a loan.

I see where Zuckerburg is coming from. I see its equivalents in place all over the world, and wonder uneasily what the real objection is.

Public assistance is quite easy to get. And once you are on it it is extremely difficult to be removed from.

I volunteered for two years with the Houston Housing Authority and it opened my eyes to many things. The first being that there is a need for public assistance in some form. It also showed me that fraud is rampant. Mostly it showed an amazing entitlement culture that rather than be thankful for the thousands of dollars a month they got in benefits they thought they were owed more. (Certainly not all fit this mold but well north of half did.). These attitudes know all races not just minorities.
