If you go to the beach around here and you don't see dozens of brown pelicans, you've got your eyes closed. They don't get anywhere near my house, though, which is about 15 miles inland. Every once in a while a great egret will land in our yard.

Strangest looking thing when they land, with large wings flapping out and 10 foot long legs hanging down. Our yard is home to about half the world's population of alligator lizards and the egrets seem to enjoy these.

Speaking of big birds, one time I was trout fishing in upstate NY, standing on a gravel/sand bar ext to a nice fishing spot. I heard this weird wooshing sound behind me. I turned and there was this Great Blue Heron attempting to land there. I was standing still, so it probably thought I was a dead tree or something. Scared the shit out of me. I yelled, it "squawked" and flew off.

Interesting link, wolfie. Wasn't aware they went that far north. I always thought of them as a southern bird.

It would be very unusual if I didn't see them while fishing. 'Round these parts, if you have a backyard fish pond (sup my next door neighbors), you have to take measures to keep them out -- they can clear a pond out very quickly.
I hand fed small bluegill to a young heron once (wasted off my ass at the time).

We have a golf course in the Rochester area named Blue Heron Hills precisely because of the wetlands in the area that are the habitat of the Great Blue Heron. They used to have a thing there with Jeff Sluman. He would bring in three other PGA players and they would play for a weekend and the proceeds went to charity.

I know you fish the Columbia, but this is an interesting note here..when the ODFW admits a species will become extinct because of the fucking sea lions in the river, you already know it is too late.

I was referring to the Pelicans. I have seen Herons in Ct. I think they are pretty much everywhere.

The problem is that most people across the country see sea lions as cute and cuddly, rather than the violent predators they are. Hard to get the Marine Mammal Protection Act changed with that prevailing attitude.
Maybe with Trump's propensity to rule-by-fiat, he can throw down a EO to let ODFW kill every one of them in the Willamette, and every one that ventures above Beacon Rock on the Big C. We've spent billions upon billions trying to save them, and a;ll the investment in habitat restoration and everything else is being eaten right before our very eyes. I've seen the ODFW guys in the boats at Willamette Falls throwing firecrackers at them, and the other shit, but it doesn't work.
Hell, over the winter, there were sea lions all the way up to the dam on the Clackamas (eating wild fish). Been fishing there forever, and never seen that before -- sure, maybe a seal or 2 in high water years. When they start going 15+ miles up a mountain stream, they need to go. It's not like they're endangered -- there's more sea lions in Astoria than there are people.

Funny story 88. Those old Army/Navy surplus stores were nails.Do kids today have access to such gear? Those GI flashlights and folding shovels (the are entrenching tools BTW) were just a few of the cool things a kid could buy back then.

# 9 is a big fucking bull sea lion. I hooked a nice Chinook off Hammond last September, and started reeling as fast as I could. That fucking sea lion hit that chinook like a freight train. My buddy fired up the boat and we chased that fucker for about 2 minutes to at least save the gear. Finally got half the head and gill plate and the gear back and watched the cocksucker flop that Chinook around while he ate it. Took everything I had not to pull my 40 and waste that bastard. That was 12 miles up river, to hear they are that far up the Clack is bad news. A count this spring put over 8,000 pinepeds in the river between Astoria and Bonneville Dam. Federally protected species depredating on a endangered salmon runs, unreal.
O for the days of the old guys smoking them with .22's and tying old tire rims on them so the crabs could have them.Or so I have heard.

Rumor has it a guy lost a finger to a sea lion in Oregon City while netting a fish.
And the Clack thing is very disturbing. We worked hard, and sacrificed a great fishery (above the dams) on the Clack to rebuild the native. And the fucking bastards swim over 140 miles from the ocean, up through huge rapids, to hit the easy targets.
KILL!! KILL!! KILL!!!
I'd be mighty tempted to pick them off in the Clack, but the repercussions would probably hold me back.

Those turkey buzzards are monsters. I saw one land one ahead of me a ways on a country road and his wingspan was over a lane wide.

Smackaholic, Google (1) turkey vulture wingspan and (2) highway lane width -- and see if maybe you've embellished things a bit.
Speaking of turkeys, I posted this at .net a number of months ago...

Children's Pool Beach in La Jolla used to be one of the most beautiful beaches in California and very safe for families with little kids because of the small breakwater.
Now it's been pretty much taken over by harbor seals and sea lions, and closed completely from December through May for harbor seal pupping. You can go down there during the summer but you're not supposed to bother the natives. And who would want to anyway it stinks so bad.

In my travels across the country, as far as wildlife goes, there was one common theme in every place I went -- the turkey vultures were the same.
Pretty sure if I went outside right now, I'd see one within 5 minutes.

The fact that bucket-biologists are idiots is because of the GOP? That's quite a leap.
I live near the Columbia River. Thanks to the bucket-scum, it now has bass (mostly smallmouth), walleye (where they grow bigger than anywhere on earth), the occasional striped bass, shad (by the millions), and a host of other invasive species. I don't think either party passed a law to put them there.

Here's the actual facts, as well as the disgusting GOP party line ...
The administration's budget proposal, released Tuesday by the White House's Office of Management and Budget, zeroes out the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, which since 2010 has provided more than $2.2 billion for programs to improve and protect the lakes.
"State and local groups are engaged and capable of taking on management of clean-up and restoration of these water bodies," the budget office's written narrative accompanying the budget states.

It was a narrow country road, not a highway. It was a good ways ahead of me and a few feet off the ground, so from my point of view it sure the fukk appeared to be wider than the lane. Whatever it was, it was fukking monsterous.
Anyway, that fukking thing was wider than the lane as surely as I have a 12 inch cahk!

I'm suggesting that your "protections of the Great Lakes" are as effective as a giant rubber around the planet would be against an AIDS-infected meteorite. You can steal as much money as you want from others. But you cannot spend that money in a manner that will achieve the unicorns-flying-out-your-ass-dreams you have. Let's just watch what happens, amigo. And when it doesn't work out as you wish, we can watch you blame the GOP.
