This is like right out of 1984 or the old USSR when history was expunged. Here in Lee (yes, Robert E.) County, there is a segment of the population that wants to eliminate him. Such a waste when they should be pooling their energy and resourcesto expunge drugs, guns, and gangs from their neighborhood, not images of a former CSA General. I don't expect common sense to prevail.

You can't judge people from different times and values to today's values.

Imagine 100 years from now all Obama references and statues being removed from society because he used "smart bombs" to go after terrorists but also killed 1000s of innocent cilvillans..........

This doesn't begin and end with Lost Cause Confederate statues. This will open up a door that will lead to many, many more monuments coming down. The Boys in Gray statue being removed by an angry mob, that just can't happen. People need to realize how many confederate soldiers were drafted and basically given the option to either fight or die. The irony is hilarious

Bring every U.S. statue -----> DOWN.

Most of the monuments meant something to people of a past generation(s).

You know, back when people were still sort of... stupid.

Nobody knows or cares who these people were any longer.

And we are a lot smarter now.

It's clearly time to reboot.

Begin erecting new statues in honor of human beings who are making positive contributions in this generation.

For example, erect a statue right out in front of this...

Some might consider wiping one's ass with the constitution treasonous. FDR did so in a number of cases. He blatantly violated it and when the SC said, hold on a minute, he tried to stack the court with his lackeys.

Good for the local law enforcement there in Durham. This is something I certainly haven't seen published by the national media.

To be fair, the Lenin statue is on private property.

Baltimore gave in to the madness.

Abolitionist Frederick Douglass' statue sits across The Talbot Boys statue at the County Courthouse in Easton, Maryland.

Interesting read on the brothers in Talbot county fighting against each other. It's not so black and white when it comes to these border states during the Civil War.

Some fought for their families and others fought for the Union who were abhorrent to the idea of owning slaves. It was a very conflicting time for some. Same internal conflict Lee had. He chose to be loyal to his state and his family that lived inside it. He was very loyal to Virginia, although it ended up costing him his legacy as an amazing General.

Well?
Horowitz's column is what's Fake News.
But they came to defend a historic monument honoring a complex man and cause, and not to attack it or, presumably, anyone else.
They weren't there to "defend" a(n) historic monument, or anything else. Nobody was going to remove the statue last week. In fact it's not even scheduled for removal, due to a court order.
How do you "defend" something that's no in jeopardy? If the city does eventually remove the statue it will be because the city council voted to remove it. Legally.

Try again.

I know. MS told me it was. He also wouldn't give me an answer when I asked him how he felt if it was a black guy getting lynched on the same property (which is in public view).

Yep. This is all true. There was an injunction filed back in May preventing its removal for at least six months as the Sons of the Confederacy are fighting in court to keep it standing.

The Unite the Right Rally was being held to send a message I suppose. It was stupid and it backfired. Those stupid skinhead assholes only fueled and expedited the decision to remove the Baltimore memorials.

The smart thing to do was to organize a sit in at the park and educate any and all comers who opposed the sit in about Lee and the Civil War.

What a train wreck that story turned out to be in the link JSC posted. (Not calling out JSC here, just journalism in general.)

First off a quote from that story:
we do not believe in one race being hire than another, we are all people
Second, the headline says two permits were issued to counter protestors. Yet the story offers no mention of the permits, quotes no one from the city, and includes a press release of one of the "alleged" permitted counter protestor groups. (Alleged because the story provides no basis that they were permitted.)

Newsmen and women from generations prior are rolling over in their graves. Not the best link to use to make your point JSC, just saying.

As much as I despise those white nationalists shitbags, they were within their first amendment rights. And if a heavy left news reporting site is reporting that the counter protesters were at Emancipation Park and not at their designated area whilst heaving water bottles at the group trying to enter the park, then our main stream media is way beyond fucked in the head. I mean, I kind of already knew that, but this is propaganda at its worse.

So the more I learn about this past Saturday the more blame I place on the city and police.

They had opportunities to defuse tensions and didn't take them. They allowed the protestors to leave their permitted areas without consequence. They issued permits to both sides who tend towards violence.

Pretty big fail for the city, county, police, etc.

I am not a lawyer, but I have sat in the jury box twice. Right now the attorney from Ohio is telling and showing a far better story than is the attorney from Louisiana. The map outlining the parks and permit locations, along with the locations of the violence are pretty telling.

Carry on.

Left Seater had it right when he said both Democratic & Republican parties should denounce and distance themselves from these right & left wing hate groups.

What's the point in counter protesting? To shout down opposing views, and take away free speech. The more news on the event the more it's apparent there were not all that many peaceful protesters in Charlotteville. Mostly just a bunch of haters, but rock throwing does't equate to 3rd degree murder with a 1.5 ton vehicle.
