Not like it could do much damage to Houston. Everything that was gonna get fukked, already is.

This might be the week when Mar-a-Lago becomes Mar-a-Mar.
Re: Wolfie, better get them hatches barrened
We'll be ready. Survived two named hurricanes that were retired: Charlie and Wilma. I've got aluminum accordion shutters on all house openings (doors windows, sliders) and can close up the house in about 1/2 hour. Got a full tank of propane to cook when power is out and plenty of water and other necessities. This is a photo of outside my den window after Wilma in 10/05.

My Norfolk Island Pine took a beating but it came back. You can see Wilma's winds here came from the north (right in the photo).

My neighbor had a tree next to his pool that decided to go for a swim. Wrecked his pool cage. We had no damage to the house.

Of course if a storm spawns tornadoes, all bets are off.

Never been through a hurricane. I'm quite confident it sucks, though.
O the other corner of the country, in some spots, it rained a little bit (<.10") about 3 weeks ago. Only time in 2.5 months. Much of the state is on fire, including the one just east of Portland, that was caused by some kids thinking it would be funny to hike a mile up the Eagle Creek Trail (most hiked trail in the state), and fire off a smoke bomb to make everyone think there was a fire. There wasn't actually a fire... til the smoke bomb set one. A bunch of people (~150) had hiked up to Punchbowl Falls to go swim (it's a thing), and couldn't get out, and had to hile 13 miles up a trail the next morning to get rescued. The wind is blowing straight into Portland (at least it's hot as fuck, so we got that going for us), and everything is covered with ash -- it's like super light snow.. There's no clouds, but it was fairly dark all day. A person can do a Trump-staredown at the sun. Smells funny, too.
Good luck, Southern folk.

Looks like this thing may pass close to us. The islands are under "mandatory" evacuation. I will close up all my shutters tomorrow morning. Essentials are well stocked. My biggest concern is possible flooding. I'll have a full report including photos when the dust settles.

HURRICANE IRMA UPDATE
In all my years as a serious weather geek, I have been hearing the various worst case scenarios for Florida and the Southeastern US if a truly powerful Category 5 hurricane were to ever hit. Real apocalyptic stuff. Major wind damage. Walls of water 10 - 20 feet high sweeping across the lower Florida peninsula sweeping away homes, bridges, roads, everything before them. But, in the back of your mind you wonder if it could ever get that bad.
I had thought Andrew's hit in 1992 was as close to that worst case as we could see. That was a very devastating event. Just ravaged Southern Florida in all kinds of ways. The effects of Andrews are still felt today. And the biggest effect of it was not seen at first or even in the first 10 years following it. But it is sure seen now. Andrew unleashed a wave of escaped exotic wildlife that were being kept as pets. Especially reptiles. And now Florida is awash in an epidemic of an exploding population of pythons and nile monitor lizards that their introduction into the wilds of Florida was the result of Andrew. These creatures unleashed have created havoc on native wildlife and also for humans in terms of losing pets and livestock to them.
But now we have Irma. And this is a far, far more powerful storm than Andrew was. It is also heading on the true worst case scenario. Because in the true worst case for Florida, the storm would move north up the west coast of the peninsula. This is exactly the path it is now expected that Irma is going to take. As the winds wrap back around Irma's center of circulation, they are going to push the water out of the Gulf of Mexico back to the east and drive them inland. The big problem here is that the Gulf of Mexico is very shallow to the west of Florida. This makes the water very prone to stack when driven by the winds of a hurricane.
This then causes it to gain height and turn into a wall of water being driven inland. So I see now they are expecting a storm surge on the west coast of Florida of 10 - 15 feet on the central to southern portions of the west coast. That is not survivable. That amount of water that will come in and the force behind it will devastate almost if not all of the private residential dwellings. You will not be able to flee to a roof because the force of the water, the debris in it will hammer homes and bring them down. Larger well constructed multi story structures may fair better. But, the devastation that should result from a storm surge of 15 feet is going to be of epic, to biblical levels. There is only one way to make sure you survive this.
LEAVE NOW! If you have not already made your way out of Southern and Western Florida, you need to do that now. If you are in low lying areas on the eastern side of Florida and they are telling you to leave, you better heed that warning.
This is going to be as bad as it gets. I am deeply concerned for what is set up to happen here. Whoever it is that you pray to, you best hit your knees now and plead for mercy. If you have family or friends in Western and Southern Florida who have not left, you need to do everything you can to get them out of harm's way. Because based on the models right now and what it is showing for storm surge impact, not leaving is very likely going to be a fatal decision.
I heard an Emergency Operations Manager in Florida telling people yesterday, "do not bother calling 9 1 1 when this thing really hits, nobody is going to answer your call. You will be all on your own left only to the mercy of God." He was not being overly dramatic. He was telling a cold hard truth.
