Oy vey, when it comes to the gastronomic nightmare that is gefilte "fish" (no evidence of actual fish has ever been detected), the Ashkanazi people should file a class action suit and sue themselves for mental cruelty!

As for the term Ashkanazi, this is an accurate distinction within the slippery semantics of "Semitism." The Ashkanazi were converted from the Khazar in 730 ce, officially, and by 1000 ce or so were present in Eastern Europe and Germany. Their language, Yiddish, like African and Native American languages, is unwritten, and certainly not Semitic. The word "Jew" only came into parlance in the 18th century, and the Ashkanazi only learned Hebrew in the 20th century (not including the rabbinical use), as well as changing their names to Hebrew ones--Begin, Sharon, Shamir, Meir, Netanyahu--all made up out of whole cloth. And needless to say, no actual Hebrew would eat something as disgusting as gefilte fish.
