It should be interesting how this all works out in wine country. A lot of middle/low income housing has been lost, and the cost of housing has really skyrocketed the last decade or so. I wonder how the wineries will get all their help back (legally).

Typical NoCal fire. They have no defensible space and do everything not to help themselves out . I took a lot of my flight training out of Lake County and flew down in to the area a lot.

Been pretty interesting listening to what is going on there. Huge economic loss.

This is mega-fucked. The flooding last year did not alleviate the drought stress of the larger trees, but provided a huge growth of underbrush--all of which is on fire now. Fifteen separate fires all seemed to start at once and swept through a huge area. And the worst is supposedly yet to come as the various fires merge. There's barely any containment at all. Many of the beautiful wineries are toast, including Gunlach Bunschu, the oldest in Napa Valley. The air is barely breathable throughout the Bay Area. And to think that we're at the mercy of the Moron for federal aid just adds to the nightmare. No word on they all started.

The unusually wet winter played a big part in creating the prime fire conditions this year.

The locals used to burn it all on purpose, but they were just stupid savages so what do they know?

I'm in the middle of it. I've got fire refugees in my house.... their house hasn't burned yet but they reasonably expect it will overnight. School is canceled tomorrow due to air quality.

A couple of the local vineyards have gone up in flames.

I'll be OK, I'm in a good spot with no fuel (big old trees) around me. It'll be what it'll be, it's a big mess though. For three days straight it's smelled like a campfire at my house. The smokey air burns eyes and throats. Blah, I miss Texas.

Burn a 100 yr old tree you are adding co2 that was locked up a long time ago.

The smoke came in my windows Sunday night and I thought their was a fire somewhere on the block. I turned on the local news KTVU and they said there was a fire in Sonoma/Napa and it had burned 200 acres. 3 hours later it had burned 45,000 acres. The wind was blowing around 50 to 80 mph in Sonoma and Napa.


To give you a perspective on how fast the fire was burning... It was burning the equivalent of a football field every 3 seconds.

Let that sink in for a second... or 33 plus yards.


This bad-boy isn't close to over and the winds are supposed to pick up tomorrow.

Damn, wouldn't it be great to live in Omaha right about now?

Back in August I had to spend a night sleeping my car in the Nevada desert because of wildfires. Ended up having to drive six hours around through Cali to get where I was going. The whole place is a fucking dustbin.

Almost exactly 10 years since we almost got burned out, when it seemed like half of San Diego County was on fire. Spent three days with my truck loaded with all our valuables and pointed down the driveway while monitoring TV, radio and the interwebs for information. Some of our friends had to get out of their house with nothing but their clothes and their car as it burned down in the Rice fire. My brother-in-law almost got burned out in the Witch fire.

Scary situation for those in the danger zone, but it's what you deal with. Other parts of the country have hurricanes, tornadoes, blizzards, etc. We have fires and an occasional earthquake.

We have a (mostly) defenseable zone around our city. A fire came up to the city limits just last week. The grass will burn, the houses not so much.

The carbon in the trees came out of the atmosphere. The carbon coming out of your vehicle's tailpipe came from under the earth's surface. And when the burned vegetation grows back (which it does quickly after a fire, as a general rule), it eventually absorbs the same amount of carbon it released.

Yes, but remember that the carbon that was absorbed by vegetation is what assisted the planet in cooling enough to allow life to flourish. Just because it is natural does not make it conducive for human life. In fact it is actually much more unnatural for this planet to be at a state that allows us to live.

I'm in Cordelia, that damned smell of campfire has been hanging out for 4 days now. It goes away for a bit but then it's back.

My refugee's house still hasn't burned but it's not out of the woods yet.
