Let's say we lived in a society where everyone knew that there was a good chance the guy standing next to them, in fact was packing.
You know damn well what would happen. They would both keep their hands to themselves. That fukking punk knew he could pop that old dude with minimal repercussions, so he did.

Yeah, a stadium full of armed, liquored up rednecks. What could go wrong?

The max time for simple assault in North Carolina is 30 days. But he will be liable for civil penalties if the dude he hit wants to sue and he's likely going to lose his job and go broke. So it's not all bad.

Rednecks all over places like Texas walk around armed. And how often do they shoot one another? Pretty much never.
Normal people are in no hurry to go to jail for many years because they shot someone.
If this even goes to court, that dickhead will argue that the other guy was talking shit so they got in a fight. Nobody is going to jail over it.
He'll likely get a fine, maybe some public service.

It's obvious that it's slugger's bitch who has caused this whole debacle and who is playing slugger like a sad sack puppet, ordering him to punch--look carefully, there's a longer tape than this one. This is exactly the kind of guy the DA will make a deal with to go into the military instead of jail.

That may have been so in 1957. It's not 1957, it's 2017. The go to jail or the army thing hasn't been in place for at least 40 years. Hell, black folks can even use our water fountains now.

By no means am I guaranteeing he gets the max. If they want to teach him a lesson they may give him a couple of weekends, some probation and community service. It's probably more worried since the fellow he hit has all the evidence he needs for a civil suit. He might want to kiss this house and and car goodbye.

It's a shame the judge can't hand out a good beating as a sentence. Have cops use him for "use of force" and K9 training.

I was in AF boot camp <40 yrs ago (barely), and had recruits in my flight who were there because of jail-or-military sentences. Also have heard recently that it still goes on. However,
"a judge or prosecutor can do whatever they please (within the limits of the law for their jurisdiction), but -- that doesn't mean the military branches are required to accept such people and -- they don't."
I can't vouch for the reliability of the link's source, but my guess is that there are young service members who are currently in the military because they were offered it as an option for jail time. Link implies that some are accepted, but may not be eligible for reenlistment.

Used to do that here. Recall reading that qualifications in the US army were relaxed a decade or so ago? Shortage of able bodies for Iraq so ex-cons are accepted?

The old guy was running his mouth and pointing his finger at Cam Jr. People need to understand that if you're going to run your mouth, there's always somebody who can shut it. If I was forced to sit on a civil jury for that bs, I'd be pissed, and probably not award big mouth a thing. Certainly not thousands of dollars.

What injury was running his mouth and pointing his finger causing to wannabe Cam Newton?

Which is why you won't be "forced" to sit on a jury... because you're an idiot.

Joe's take certainly is an interesting one.
In baseball, during the game, in the stands, there's kind of a picnic feeling; emotions may run high or low, but there's not too much unpleasantness.
In football, during the game in the stands, you can be sure that at least twenty-seven times you're capable of taking the life of a fellow human being.

You should post a photo of your knuckles sometime, it would be interesting to see how scarred they are from decades of being dragged on the ground. Also, there's probably a woman on your block who wears short skirts. She's begging for it, right?

I've been selected to serve on a jury before. Quite the aggravation as stereotypes seem to take precedent over logic. Just imagine trying to get 12 knuckleheads here to agree on anything. Not a good experience.
I don't condone what happened, although I'm not surprised it did. I just don't see it as something that should add to an already overflowing court docket for serious offenses. Find a bandaid and some ice if needed.
