Unintended consequence of raising the minimum wage...

So while waiting for the return flight of today’s out and back schedule the right seater and waitress and I walked two blocks from the FBO to lunch. Sadly we ended up at a Chili’s as it was close. This is my first time in a Chili’s in a couple of years and we were told to seat ourselves. We chose a table and sat down. When we didn’t see a wait staff person for a good bit we flagged someone down and they told us we could just order from the tablet on our table. So we did and this little tablet also allowed us to pay our check when we were ready.
Our food was delivered by someone who seemed to be doing the same thing for most of the restaurant. This same person was cleaning off tables when people left. Interesting concept. You no longer need waiters or busboys. Diners order themselves, then pay when ready. The only interaction is a hostess and food runner. Since we are working in a bit we didn’t drink but I would guess a bar tender would also be necessary. So instead of 20 front of house staff there seemed to be 4.
Sure seems like this is what you get when you artificially raise wages. People lose their jobs and automation replaces them. Paying a busboy a “living wage” results in the elimination of said busboy. But so many of these minimum wage jobs are not meant to be the last job a person has. A busboy is something one would do until they finished school or job training etc.
Oh and the food was mediocre, can’t say I would suggest taking the family to a Chili’s near you tonight.

Minimum wags increases are not the reason they went to tablets FOUR years ago in ALL their locations. Forbes (your boys) ran a article on it in 2013 and minimum wage was not cited.

When they do raise the minimum wage you'll have to bus your own dishes.
At least you won't feel guilty stiffing anybody on the tip.

Minimum wage has an effect on labor percentages in the food business. Anything to lower labor costs will be a factor. Using technology to eliminate jobs whether minimum wage or not is going to happen. Minimum wage may not be the only factor but it is damn sure part of the equation.

Who am I tipping at Chili’s? The hostess? The food runner? I have no problem tipping and tipping well for good service but what service did we receive other than a delivery from the kitchen to our table?

It very well could have been a factor.
Is it the sole factor?
No.
But to deny that the incentive to do away with such a job, when the cost of that job is artificially raised, is bullshit.
McD's is headed in the same direction. I have used a few of their self serve kiosks and they were fukking horrible.

None of you took even one second to try and find the Forbes article did you?
So to recap: you tards have no idea what you are talking about and none of you feel any need to EDUCATE yourselves on the topic.

The ones staffed by humans aren't exactly wonderful either.

Uhm... ordering from the table via tablet has been around for years.
And I've seen it in states with low minimum wage.
In short... so much for that theory.
Try getting a side of ranch or some such shit from that system. Or a bottle of hot sauce.

Dins, The minimum wage raises are not the sole reason, but they certainly do make the decision to automate such jobs more likely. It really is simple math.
I suppose I should be happy to see the entry level low pay jobs go away as it means more jobs for people like me that service the equipment that will replace entry level workers, but I'm not. Just as a board needs its tards, an economy needs entry level shit jobs to help get folks used to simply showing up on time.

Because reading one article from a business magazine that one of my college professors made required reading, and I soon found the content to be mostly bullshit will not bring some huge revelation about the impact of technology on the labor ratios in food service.
Likely you read Money magazine for their so clever financial advice.

I just got to wondering who pumps the gas for the driverless cars, and will they go by themselves to get an oil change?

Economics 101: A wage is a price. Artificially raising a price above market value will lead to oversupply (unemployment).
Prosperity brought about by rising prices is what the idiot drinks.
