Look, he was a preacher, and a pretty damn good one, whether or not you buy what he's selling. He was also a man, and as such he made mistakes. Undoubtedly a lot less than you have. Overall, I'd say he was a decent man who had the courage of his convictions, and did what he believed at the time was right.
And without question many more will mourn his passing than will mourn yours. By a factor of about ∞.

There is a surprising (at least to me) amount of vitriol and anger on this board against a man who lived a life consistent with his beliefs, confessed his faults openly, was humble, and genuinely desirous that people should gain the same sense of peace about their eternal future as he had about his.
Not really sure why that would stir up so much scoffing or derision, but I suppose that misery loves company.

Like you, I don't much buy into the whole religion thing, but I do understand and appreciate how it does help many people.
