@realDonaldTrump
China has been asked to develop a plan for the year of a One Billion Dollar reduction in their massive Trade Deficit with the United States. Our relationship with China has been a very good one, and we look forward to seeing what ideas they come back with. We must act soon!

That's quite a demand, considering our Massive Trade Deficit with China is $375 Billion.

Problem is that sometimes the only shit available is Chinese shit. So what are you supposed to do if you need some shit?
As much as I hate to admit it, I think Trump may be on the right track here, even if he's approaching it in a really dumb way.
China has been kicking our ass for a long time. And they don't exactly practice free trade themselves. They manipulate their currency, they keep a lot of foreign competition out, and they are actively stealing our technology and IP. They're going to own us if we don't do something about it.

But what if they call us on all the loans? I seriously doubt they'll loan anymore after this...

If that logic holds true with China, and I do not know if it does, then wouldn't the debtor hold the cards? What if we tall China "Fuck you, I'm not going to pay." Are they going to start a war against their biggest customer and debtor? Who is going to buy our bombed out shit? They need us more than we need them, I think. Could be an interesting few years.
They need our money. They get that by selling the US cheap shit that the masses simply cannot live without at the prices they pay. The US consumer does not give a fuck about the trade deficit, they do not give a fuck about American jobs they simply want their goods, electronics and tennis shoes at cheap prices that make the store huge amounts of money.

They didn't "loan" us anything. The bought treasury bonds. No one can "call it in." It's fixed rate, long term.
But if they did want their money right now... that would be an amazing boon to the USA. Print up the $1 trillion (we can rack up that much deficit in a year), and hand it right over to them. The US$ loses a little value (which bolsters exports), and the Yuan gains value... and China's economy goes into the toilet overnight. A complete societal collapse for them.
Bring it on.
And geez, I'm not much of an economist, but apparently I was less stoned and more awake than many here during basic economics in high school. Shocking amount of cluelessness here.
Cluelessness like saying David Ogden Sires was an Oregon boy
Or that sand and clay make a good mix
Or that sushi is the leading cause of food borne illness
Clueless like that?

The only way the can "call it in" is by selling their bonds, which they are perfectly free to do.
The thing is, if they try to dump a whole lot of those bonds at once their value will decrease. The stability of the dollar is what makes those bonds attractive in the first place, so it's sort of a catch 22.
By and large, I think that each of you are on the wrong track. Do we have a trade deficit with China? Depends on how you look at it. Do we import a bunch of low quality, cheap goods that we as Americans cannot create as inexpensively? Yes. But do we import high dollar, high quality items from China? No, not really. Instead, we import those items to China resulting in a trade deficit that they cannot match— items such as airliners, cars —big expensive things.
Which kind of trade deficit would you rather have? One based on crappy plastic stuff you buy from a Dollar General store or one where they buy seriously expensive goods? Because that’s where we are right now.
Even the steel import business that Trump is talking about is a sham. The US is the only country that doesn’t reduce the quantity of steel manufactured even when there is a glut on the market. But China does. We do it to prop up our steel industry. The tariff issue is a smoke screen that ignores our culpability in creating the surplus steel that drives prices down.
If we are to discuss Trump being a good negotiator, we’d be better off waiting until we see what develops in the North Korea talks. If he accomplishes what the previous four presidents were incapable or unwilling to do, then he truly deserves to be considered a terrific diplomat.
So in other words, in a conversation about all the things dims doesn't know, you thought it would be a good idea to fuck with me, not about the topic I brought up, but just about me. You really need to grow up.

It works for most.
