Here's a rendering of the FIU pedestrian bridge as it was designed to look and function. Notice the graceful (and very important) cable suspension system.


And here it is today, having collapsed five days after it was installed in a pre-fab fashion and opened to the public. But look, those silly engineers had not installed the cable suspension system yet. That's right, they opened the bridge before the suspension support was installed.

You install a section, hang a cable. Install a section, hang a cable. Etc..... You imply that they were supposed to install the entire thing, then hang cables, which to me, makes no sense.

This is an entirely different type of suspension bridge. You have to hang a section prior to the cable, since the cable does not hang vertically. It hangs on a diagonal. It needs the section to attach to. I know a bridge engineer that has designed this type. He did the I-91/95 intersection. It uses this style bridge. He says it is the way of the future as it uses compression as well as tension. Makes for an extremely sturdy bridge......when done right.......usually by white men. :grin:
