A sure sign I’m really old and out of touch

Just like those high school kids in Parkland whose possible last actions of their lives were to video themselves cowering under their desks, this gentleman used his possible last minutes videoing himself on the SW plane whose engine had grenaded in flight.
Like the title says, I’m obviously too old or out of popular culture’s zeitgeist when I don’t undstand this impulse to tape yourself in moments of danger. This has to be a millennial thing.

What would you be doing in that situation - reading your Kindle?

On a more positive note, it's apparently the first fatality in American commercial aviation since 2009. Pretty impressive, really. And all thanks to Donald Trump.

Look about me to remove anything sharp, examine my seatbelt for proper tightness, visualize where the exits are, how to get to them, and how to operate them, review crash procedures, calm my aislemates, encourage them to do what I just did, and then sit quietly to listen to any further instructions.
And I use a Nook book, so nope, no Kindle reading.

Looks like a bunch of mouth breathers to me. You can tell they all paid attention to the pre flight briefing. That should bring on the hypox a bit faster. Only got a few bottles on the aircraft for emergency and well regulated so all the panic stricken people do not suck it all down.
The emergency descent on one engine with a full payload probably put some stomachs up in their mouths, that had to be quite the ride. Got to get down to 10K pretty fast as that O2 is going to go fast for the passengers.

What a f@cking idiot. Dude live streams the fact he didn’t listen to the safety briefing, can’t read or even understand instructions in photos. The oxygen mask goes over your nose and mouth dumbass.
In fact all three visible in that photo are dumbasses.

From what I hear, the pilot did a pretty decent job.

Unfortunately for many millennials if there isn't an apt for a particular problem they are lost. Kinda like Mikey in a voters booth.

Pilot
s. And hell yeah, big props to them. This is what all the sim time and check rides are for.
Some of the passenger accounts are amusing in how wrong they are yet these people were on the plane. Saw one where a guy said smoke filled the cabin from the broken window and that is why the masks dropped. Claims no one could breathe due to the smoke.
Uhh wrong. The smoke was actually water vapor due to the low pressure difference and the masks dropped due to the cabin decompression and lack of oxygen. People apparently were still wearing the masks even when the plane came to a stop on the runway. Just as an FYI, there isn’t more than about 10 minutes of oxygen in the system. After that you can take the mask off. Just sayin.

Apparently the pilot was a former Navy flyer, one of the first females to fly the F/A-18.
One of the comments I read in WaPo was from another former Navy pilot saying that landing on an 8,000 foot runway with one engine out might be nerve wracking, but not so much if you're used to landing on a moving aircraft carrier.

You mean it's Trump's fault.
In January, Donald Trump wrote:Since taking office I have been very strict on Commercial Aviation. Good news - it was just reported that there were Zero deaths in 2017, the best and safest year on record!
He gets credit for zero in 2017, and blame for one already in 2018.

That would be Obama's fault.

Somebody has to pickup Screwys action when he is in the basement. Never let a good crisis go to waste when you can make political hay out of it.

Trump claimed credit for airline safety several months ago. I guess you and dins haven’t really been following. I’m just acknowledging his incredible success in that area.
You sure seem sensitive about perceived criticism of your Dear Leader. I wonder why that is.

Not sensitive at all. I believe in the First Amendment. I just find it amusing how you left types can interject a Trump reference into anything. Maybe even a dog food discussion.

WTF does it have to do with the first amendment?
And comparing Trump to dog food would be an insult to Purina.

Mikey I can't help but see you like to complain about Trump, and I agree with some of your points, but I would also say Trump hasn't done anything nearly as damaging as endorse illegal immigration, as does Jerry Brown and the California Assembly.
Neither party deserves a free pass like the Democrats receive in California, and that is a major reason politics here are so terrible.
