The Boy Scouts started going down hill when they had to move meetings from schools to churches. For many troops they went from backpacking state and federal parks and forests to for example in San Diego, camping in hotel circle.

Then add the LGBT factor and now girls and it's all fucked up. It's the Boy Scouts, not the Girl or LGBT Scouts. The Boy Scouts isn't about sex, it's about serving your community and learning and enjoying the outdoors. Most scouts are finished by the time they're 16 years old.

Just one more thing the government probably mostly Democrats screwed up, and they really had no business being involved in the first place.

Have you ever actually been involved in Scouting (I doubt it)? This now qualifies as probably your most ill informed post, which is really saying something. Mormon boys have automatically become Scouts for something like 100 years. Many Scouts, especially the ones who take it seriously, stay until they're 18.

The "government probably mostly Democrats" have nothing to do with this, as much as you would like to believe that all evil flows from there.

Our Troop, which my kid aged out of around 2010, has been sponsored for many years by a Catholic parish, though a lot of members were not part of the parish. The focus of a Scout troop depends a lot of the interests and skills of the adult leaders. Our main focus was on camping, outdoor skills and first aid, often winning "Camporee" competitions against much larger troops (which sort of puts a lie to your usual uninformed BS). Our Scout Master was a firefighter and EMT on Camp Pendelton. One father was an engineer in the LA Fire Department. Another was a Marine Colonel in recon. He was pretty damn good at setting up orienteering courses on San Clemente Island, where we went camping for a week every year for four or five years before Homeland Security cancelled that program.

I actually don't like the idea of girls being in the troop. As a boys-only group it gives them a chance to get together and screw around and be boys without the pressure of trying to look cool for the chicks. My understanding of this change is not that girls will be completely integrated into the troops, but that it will given them a chance to earn the merit badges in the BSA program, which is much more comprehensive than the Girl Scouts.

Yes I was a Boy Scout, worked my way up to Senior Patrol Leader in the 70's, and was a volunteer for a Troop in Bonsail a few years back. I'll leave it at that.

And second, when it comes to incorporating girls into the BSA for the purposes of badging, wouldn’t it have been simpler to revamp the GSA to have more camping and knot tying activities than to upend the cart and blur the distinctions between the two organizations? It seems to have invited trouble where there was no need for any. Instead, it feeds into the narrative that outside forces are attempting to place more libertine values into an organization that is traditionalist in nature. It becomes a lose-lose proposition for both Scouting groups.

No Holy Underwear here. We are actually members of the Catholic parish that sponsored our troop. It was not a religious troop though. Our Scout Master, as well as a lot of the members were not Catholic. Just out to join a solid group, which it was. A pretty small troop (maximum of around 18 while were were there I think) but a really good group. The older kids were always into teaching the younger ones the skills that went into advancement, and everybody was into the hiking and camping thing. Like I said before, I always thought the Mormon / BSA thing was kind of weird. We have some Mormon neighbors and all of the Mormon kids are actually required to join. And their troops are pretty exclusionary, i.e. purely Mormon membership for the most part.

It's been a while since we were involved at all. I like the way it was set up before. With only boys in the group they could come to meetings and do their thing - be boys basically - and not have to worry about who's cool, etc. A lot less social pressure. They get enough of that at school. I don't know enough about the badging thing to really have an informed opinion. It seems like the girl scouts could do it just as well but I'm not familiar with their organization.

My dad was an Eagle Scout and he always had those manly skills available to put to use when we went out into the woods to camp or hike. Mastering all those things which I suspect are lost among most urban youth, such as orienteering, making fire without things like matches, lighters, or magnifying glasses is pretty much a lost art.

There’s something about being able to catch your own meal via a snare or a bow, cook it, and hunker down in a shelter which you gathered together from whatever is available nearby. All the crap which comprises today’s highly valued skills, such as texting, activism for the cause d’jour, or taking selfies pales in comparison to good old sharp sticks impaling rabbits which become the skewers on which your dinner is turning over an open flame.

Our local school allows joqqers to use the track at the HS, the tennis courts at the JR High, the swim center at the HS for a fee for lap swimming, etc. Why not rent out school rooms or the cafeteria or theater for non school groups. Make them pay what the security and clean up fees would be plus an additional amount. Most school rooms are empty for more than 16 hours a day. Piss poor use of an asset.

Schools are inherently bad in cost accounting and cost recovery. The way most districts work now is they have a set of buildings and grounds. Because of the way schools are ran, and the fact that the money grubbing unions have managed to get these fucking awesome retirement packages and health care packages for their employees, virtually ever dollar they get in the form of taxes goes to labor costs, with very little left over for anything novel like maintenance reserves or even basic maintenance.

They let the buildings go to shit and then when the fucking things are falling down and the roofs are leaking they say, " Oh its a danger to our kids..we need to pass this bazillion dollar bond package so we can fix the buildings and build new ones. " Any monies that would be charged for usage fees may go to a maintenance fund account of some kind, but guarranfuckingteed it will never, never, have an impact on the bottom line or impact the facilities one bit. Back when we had the sports turf business, we could install a synthetic turf field for right around 1.6 million dollars. The turf manufactuers always told them, you need to set up a sinking fund because you will need to replace the carpet in 8 to 10 years to the tune of about 500K each field. So what do they do...yeah they ignore that and when the fields go to shit then they have no money to replace them.

Keeping people off the fields and out of the facilities can make the asset last longer with less maintenance and preserve your facility for its actual intended use. Most of the time, the rental rates they charge barely pay energy costs let alone any kind of cost offset for use.

Yeah whatever. I never was a Boy Scout, Cub Scout and my kids were Cub Scouts. I was in 4H, and joined the Civil Air Patrol at 12 years old. Girls....fucking awesome. Encampments....survival training....co ed style....nights out in the woods.....although technically separated, there was plenty of chances to play grab ass, and get some stink finger. Fuck those merit badges and all your boys hanging out...seeing Kathy Ryersons unleashed tits at age 15 beside the creek was the fucking bomb.
