So the other day I flew into Detroit and grabbed a rental car. Turns out the car was brand new and had 7 miles on it as I drove it off the Avis lot. The next morning as I was heading to Willow Run to fly a couple of legs I noticed the car had Ohio plates. No big deal, but then I remember how the car was brand new. I guess Avis doesn’t register their cars at all in Michigan.

Same thing happened in California as well. My rental car had just under a 1000 miles and had Florida plates.

What do you guys pay in annual registration fees for your wheels?

Registration isn't nuts, I think it was $150 for our small SUV and $170 for the larger one. My guess is they do this for insurance purposes so they can have Ohio insurance rates and coverage instead of Michigan. Car insurance in Michigan is fucking insane.

Is Michigan a take all state? What was a move to help the lowest 5% of drivers that are basically uninsurable under normal actuarial tables, ends up costing the other 95% of insureds a huge pile of cash.

Not sure what you mean by a take all state, but we are no fault. It's sooooooper awesome.

California is somewhat expensive compared to other states, registration is based on the value of the car, but never really goes below $100 a year. I pay about $300 for my Mustang.

In some states insurers are not allowed to turn anyone who applies away. This means that if you have 10 at fault accidents and 5 DUIs they still have to offer coverage. Add to that the state approves the insurance rates and those at the top subsidize those at the bottom.

Speaking of rental cars, I'm waiting for a bill from Hertz for my use of the 407 up around Toronto last month. Rental car out of Buffalo with NY tags. I have an account with the 407, but it is for my own car which I haven't driven north in a few years. Is it possible that the cars with out of state plates were shipped to those locations? Odd that you could register a car with out of state tags.

Just another loop hole that likely won't last long.

No fault insurance sucks, as seater pointed out. It was on the ballot in California 10 or more years ago and was defeated.....

These are the California fees:

All vehicles must pay:

Registration fee: $58.
California Highway Patrol (CHP) fee: $25.
Transportation Improvement Fee (TIF)—Based on your vehicle's value:
$0 to $4,999: $25.
$5,000 to $24,999: $50.
$25,000 to $34,999: $100.
$35,000 to $59,999: $150.
$60,000 and up: $175.

I think only the $58 is tax deductible

As your car gets older, the cost goes down. I think I pay a pretty stiff add-on for my 1999 F250 Crew Cab because of the GVW as well.

No the bill for 5 DUIs and a beater of a car isn’t all that bad in these take all states. The state approves the rate bands for each insurer and would never approve of $5K a month. Hence those lower risk insureds pay more than what the actuarial tables say they should.

When my wife worked for Amica back in the day they were struggling with how to handle NJ. NJ was a no fault state and a take all state. They were losing there ass there as they had to take anyone who applied. Add to that the fraud and they were considering pulling out of the state entirely. In the end they kept their current insureds and stopped taking new business.

No clue why auto registration is a tax deduction. That should go away today.

We pay $56 per car a year to register them. The seater’s auto insurance is about $1700 annually for 2 large SUVs with a $500 deductible and $45 a day rental reimbursement. The older of the 2 is a 2013. No clue how this stacks up with other states but imagine it is on the lower end.

I think mine has been upped to like $112, plus $21 for the smog inspection (which is a joke -- if you drove it there, and it doesn't smoke, they'll bypass the emissions test and take your $21 regardless). Tags are good for 2 years. You'd think I'd remember, since I've done 2 different vehicles this year.

New York taxes gas, so that all the out of staters who come can share in paying for roads. Registration is based on GVW, so you pay more the heavier your vehicle is. It is one of the things that NY gets right.

There is one problem with that strategy, B. If you look at the people traveling through, a good chunk are on 95. They can gas up in NJ if headed north, or MA if headed south and not get gas in NY. Jersey used to have hella cheap gas, as they toll pretty much every navigable route in the state, but they recently did jack it up. I think its still cheaper than NY though. CT is just about as bad as NY.

I always assumed everyone did till I moved to TN. I had been there about 2 years when I told a guy at work I hadn't received a tax bill on my car yet. He just looked at me funny and said "Ya paid yer taxes when you bought it". I said, no Jerry, I meant property taxes. I then explained to him that in CT they tax cars as property. He just shook his head and smiled and mumbled something about stupid ass yankees. :grin:

I still give the OL shit for agreeing to move back to CT. :x

My hippy dippy plug-in Fusion hybrid gets about 24 miles to a full electric charge, which gets me to work and about half way home. If I don't do any extra driving where the gas engine cuts in I usually get about 120 to 140 mpg. I'm up to about 1100 miles on my current tank, with a little less than 1/4 left. It will be a personal record if I hit 1200.

Yeah, it's regressive and all that because not everybody can buy a plug-in but I really don't GARA.

Yeah, there’s a fair bit of traffic up that way, but nothing like 95. And anyone that makes the trip north regularly knows to stop at the Vince Lombardi rest area and top off your tanks so you don’t have to buy fuel again till you get to the land of massholes.

No one is gonna fill up in Westchester County.

Why is taxing by vehicle weight the right way to do it?

So what? There are still millions of dollars of out of state. In 2016, NYS collected a HALF BILLION in total gas tax. That spreads the burden around.

GVW is fair because as a vehicle gets larger, it inflicts more wear and tear on the highway. It's only fair that a two ton SUV be charged more than a 1800 lbs Smart Car.

Wait you said that NY taxes gas which should go to road maintenance. The 2 ton truck will pay more in gas taxes than the 1800 lb smart car over the same number of miles.

One could make the argument that the Smart Car driving more mpg is actually more of a burden on the roads than the heavier SUV.

I far prefer the flat registration fee and then the more you drive the more you pay in gas tax.

The higher GVW taxes only apply to REALLY heavy stuff, like dump trucks, semis, rumps F150 when his ex is driving it.

BTW, has rumps been in lately or has he been out living it up banging skinny chicks?
