Iceland PET
Just touched down at JFK. Long layover followed by a flight to KEF. More pics to follow.

Why anyone would go to a place named 'Iceland' is beyond me. Take every shitty aspect you have to deal with and multiply it by 50, there's your destination.

The only reason Canada isn't named Iceland is that it was already taken.

A couple of pics from the pod I am spending my two nights in Reykjavik sleeping in. And another of the front.
And now I nap. It is my curse that I can't sleep on planes.

Took a ferry to a place called Vidley Island. Then dinner at a place near the hostel called Potturinn og Pannan. The lamb was epic. Finally, still light out at 11:15 PM.

1) Hub in Atlanta
B) They don’t publish an award chart so good luck saving miles for a trip
#) Their reservation center hold times in IROP settings
&) Their planes are old and shabby, one of the oldest average ages out there
9) WiFi on their planes that has it is the suck

Re: Iceland PET
I flew Delta to LGA in May and it was on what appeared to be a fairly new plane. It had a tablet-like thing in front of each passenger seat. I entertained myself with word puzzles, while Mrs.O watched a movie. American on the return stiffed me by making me pay to put our carry-ons in the hold. Screw them.

Re: Iceland PET
I don't really have a preference for most US trips, though I had a horrific customer service experience with American last week so I won't be flying them anymore. But any "lengthy" trip in the US or international I prefer Delta, with one reason that you explained being their modern entertainment system in the seats. Also I've taken Delta on my international trips and I've had pleasant experiences with them, so why fix what's not broken? It's easy to pass a long ass flight by getting caught up on Curb Your Enthusiasm seasons.Wolfman wrote:I flew Delta to LGA in May and it was on what appeared to be a fairly new plane. Re: Iceland PET
Make no mistake, US airlines are in a race to see who can be the worst. Generally Southwest consistently delivers what they promise and as such carries the most domestic traffic. The rest are generally meh.
That said I avoid Delta when I have options. Screwy may not agree, but than again I have no clue what :/ means. However when you travel multiple times a week on commercial airlines the small things matter. When there is a blizzard I don’t want three hour hold times. Since Delta’s IT is lacking you can’t make some changes on their web site, so you wait on hold. Old planes aren’t just lacking amenities, they require more maintenance and their dispatch reliability suffers. Finally, for all the traveling for work it is nice to have a carrot out there as an incentive. Other airlines all publish an award chart so you can say I am saving up for that 120,000 first class ticket to Phucket. On Delta, the price is whatever Delta decides it is on that day.
Travel enough and every airline is going to let you down. Wolfie I bet you either had to many bags or they were oversized. If that isn’t the case then it will be very easy to get your money back. That, or you purchased a basic economy ticket which doesn’t allow for carry ons.
At the end of the day 95% of us are going to select flights on what airlines call “price time.” Price is the driving factor as long as the timing works. The others of us will select our flights for other reasons. I primarily fly American because of their service to San Antonio. They fly almost hourly to DFW which is a solid hub with flight to everywhere. They also have flights to hubs in Phoenix, Chicago and Charlotte. On top of that they have service to Miami, LA and NYC. I will also pay a bit more on American since I know they have so many flights to SA. That way when something goes wrong, and it will, I have more options.

Re: Iceland PET
No doubt about it, you fly much more often than I and so you have much better insight into what makes an airline better than another. I fly on average about once a month, which I consider a lot (for me).
Eventually one day, Delta will bend me over, but until then, I'll keep riding the wave.

Last full day in Reykjavik. Hitting the Golden Circle tomorrow. Saw the Prime Ministers residence, the Sun Voyager, BBP hot dogs (Bill Klintoon ate here), the Harpa Music Hall, statue of Lief Erikson and Hallgrimskirkja church and last, the organ inside Hallgrimskirkja.

RACK the PET and the KC Scott reference.
With the exception of the pipe organ, everything you took pictures of seems... gray and concrete-y. Like a more Scandinavian Soviet Union or something. I suppose that’s the building material that lasts the longest in that climate, yeah?
As for airlines, try Emirates. Lots of leg room, entertainment devices, decent food (as long as you don’t mind curry), and they haven’t lost my luggage— yet. I have a ton of miles with Lufthansa, but they have lowered their standards significantly from when I first started flying with them.

Yea, it is pretty grey up here. I was remarking to my wife that the architecture was very Stalinist, and the grey skies only reinforced that notion. But with all the clouds, the rain was minimal.Rooster wrote:RACK the PET and the KC Scott reference.

Got a few more pictures.
1. Gulfoss, a very Niagra like double waterfall
2. An Icelandic horse up close
3,4,5. The Bobby Fischer Center
6. A funny supermarket logo.

Went to a geothermal power plant, found out that everywhere in Iceland sels overpriced mini bar booze (I even saw a TVO sized bottle of Moet), visited a place called Lava which had a nice buffet and capped the day off walking behind Seljalandsfoss.

Trolls were racked at Skogafoss. Also saw hobbit houses. May or may not see a glacier today. It depends on how far it has receded.
