[Nonpolitical]Jeff Beck[/Nonpolitical]
Not sure if I didn't get the memo, but I'll risk starting a thread that has nothing to do with politics. My guess is it'll turn political within the first five posts, or will sink to the bottom of the page faster than Kevin Spacey's acting career.
Went to see Jeff Beck at the Celebrity Theater in Phoenix last night. First concert since returning to the desert. Hadn't been to the Celebrity since 1981 (saw Deep Purple there back then), and hadn't seen Jeff Beck since 1976 when he was performing with the Jan Hammer Group. Nils Lofgren - member of the E Street Band, successful solo artist, and Scottsdale resident - opened the show with a short 5-song set, playing solo with no band. Engaged the audience with stories of his career and ended his set with Keith Don't Go (Ode to the Glimmer Twin), which was pretty cool.
Jeff Beck is 74 but could pass for being 15 years younger. Still has the chops. As would be expected, most of his set was instrumental, but he did have Jimmy Hall (vocalist for Wet Willie) singing on several songs, with the legendary Vinnie Colaiuta (Frank Zappa, Herbie Hancock, Sting, et al) on drums. Among the show's highlights were his renditions of Freeway Jam, Stevie Wonder's Superstition, an instrumental version of the Beatles' A Day in the Life, and his encore performance of Don Nix's Goin' Down, during which a Mohawk-sporting Johnny Depp joined him onstage. The venue is in the round and pretty small (capacity 2,650), so there aren't any bad seats. Here's a partial vid clip (not taken by me) of Goin' Down from last night:

Don’t know much about most of those names other than I have heard of most of them.
Sounds like you had a good time though so rack you.

Sounds like a great show, Smackie.
I saw Jeff Beck for the first time about 10 years ago at the Greek Theater with basically the same band the played on Live at Ronnie Scotts. Jason Rebello Vinnie Colaiuta and Tal Wilkenfeld.
One of the best shows ever.
Again, a couple of years ago at the Hollywood Bowl where it was like a 50th anniversary show or something. He had a bunch of guest performers, including Steven Tyler, Billy Gibbons, Buddy Guy, Jimmy Hall, Jan Hammer and Beth Hart.
The cool thing about that show is that he played a bunch of old Yardbirds stuff - Over Under Sideways Down, Heart Full of Soul, For Your Love; and stuff from Wired with Jan Hammer.

Thanks Smackie, for bringing a thread into this shithole where a racist nazi like myself can find common ground with a fat commie hippie like mikey.
I will do my best to keep any and all SC threads floating at the top of page one, not that it needs help. As for your assertion that it is likely to drop like Let's Turd in the niner's locker room, i am afraid that nothing in this ghost town drops that quickly. It takes traffic to do that.
Doe Wilkenfeld still play with him? Watching the way her bass sits between her breastusus is worth the price of admission by itself.

I would've liked to have seen that show. About ten years ago, I saw The Yardbirds in Annapolis (only Jim McCarty & Chris Dreja were from the original lineup), and got the band to autograph a shirt I bought there. I just about never try to get autographs, and had never worn that shirt until last night. Woulda been cool to be able to get Beck to sign it, but that wasn't gonna happen.Mikey wrote:Again, a couple of years ago at the Hollywood Bowl where it was like a 50th anniversary show or something. Not on this tour. The bassist is Rhonda Smith (Prince, Chaka Khan, Beyoncé, George Clinton) and the cellist is Vanessa Freebairn-Smith. On three dates of this tour, Ann Wilson (Heart) is the vocalist, and Paul Rodgers (Bad Co., Free, The Firm) is the singer for some of the other shows. Jeff doesn't seem to have much trouble attracting talent.smackaholic wrote:Doe Wilkenfeld still play with him?

Apparently that show was released on DVD last year. You can get most of the songs on youtubePapa Willie wrote:Christ. With Jimmy Hall? I can only imagine how great that must have been.
Get fucked, Screwy. Don’t you have some super duper ass-glazed electronicunt piss to listen to?

Jimmy Hall was great covering the old Yardbirds stuff. Beth Hart was good if you like Beth Hart. Billy Gibbons was frankly disappointing. Buddy Guy does the same "impromptu" stuff every time he performs. Steven Tyler (I've never been a fan of Aerosmith) did a pretty decent version of Train Keeps a Rollin'.

Re: [Nonpolitical]Jeff Beck[/Nonpolitical]
Does Jeff ever even attempt to sing himself? Not that he needs to. He does a pretty fair job singing through his guitar.

Jeff Beck's name popped up as an answer in the LA Times crossword puzzle I was doing yesterday. Coincidence?

That sounded like a great show Smackie, wish my schedule would have allowed me to be there. Celebrity Theater is one of my favorite venues. You're right, not a single bad seat in the place. Thanks for posting the thread.
